Ashes & Diamonds Winery is a love letter to Napa as it was when it first took the world stage in the 1960s. Located at the gateway to the Valley, along its main artery Highway 29, Ashes & Diamonds’ mid-century approach extends seamlessly through its viticulture, winemaking, and architecture. The resulting wines are a wide-ranging convergence of modern and old-school flavors, all of which adhere to an ethos of light-handed winemaking and transparency of terroir.
“We visited A&D last week after having received a Food and Wine Experience gift certificate from friends. We made a reservation and A&D was able to honor our request to be seated indoors in their "mid-century modern" tasting room. Nice. The bread (best crusty bread we've had in a decade), the fruit appetizer (strawberry, sesame and miso) was exquisite, and the salad was fresh and dressed perfectly. Main courses were OK, but we understood this was not a strictly restaurant experience. On the whole, the food presentation was remarkable. The server, a tactful, handsome chap (Marco, I believe) started the experience with the preamble that A&D seeks to present a wine experience in keeping with the way Napa wines tasted in the '60's and '70's, near the beginning of the Napa valley's fame as a wine appellation. I asked him what that statement actually means and expected a semi-cogent company marketing reply. Un-preturbed, the server explained that A&D wines are more like European wines since Napa's early vintners were mostly trained in Europe. Their wines were characterized by lower tannins, naturally occurring sulfites, lighter, more nuanced flavors, organic production techniques, etc. His answer made sense and the ensuing wine experience proved his assertions. Every wine brought to our table reminded us of wines we've enjoyed in Europe, and each presentation of A&D wine was wonderful. Toward the end of the first hour, I realized the music in the dining room had been tasteful, interesting, and just the right volume. When I asked the server who picks the music, he told me the owner was once a Capital Music executive, and he picks the music. Wow. Even the music is thoughtfully presented. Ashes & Diamonds was not a typical Napa wine tasting, but rather, a powerfully consistent wine and food experience that's like a quick trip to Europe. Perfect for more experienced Napa wine fans.”
“Great wine, great scenery, Joe was a wonderful host for our tasting. Joined the club. Go hungry and get some food while you’re there.”
“My friend Vince took me to a wine tasting with some courses. Not only was Matt our server very informative and amazing but Allison our chef was incredible as well. The hospitality provided by both people was warm and encouraging. Not to mention the wine was A-mazing. The pairing is to die for —the courses and wine mix will give your taste buds a ride!! Thank you guys for a great time! 😊”
“Ashes & Diamonds is a beautiful and modern spot with a cool mid-century vibe. The design and atmosphere are as memorable as the wines. The tasting featured unique selections that stood out, each paired with artisanal cheeses and to die for fresh house-made focaccia. The staff shared the story behind the winery, adding a personal touch to the experience. It was a relaxed and enjoyable visit, perfect for anyone looking for something a little different in Napa.”
“We were there as a part of a group. Our guide, pictured in the vineyard, was excellent! No script, have us a great overview and answered all of our questions. He hosted tasting with an ease and replete with details of each wine.”
