“This place was recommended to us by the folks at Skogen Kitchen (also in Custer and also a MUST if you love food!), so we decided to try it on our way back down to Colorado after a weekend in SD. The vibe is very friendly and cozy and the parking was easy. We each had a glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice and my wife had a deliciously perfect latte. My wife had a traditional eggs benedict without ham (an accommodation they were happy to make) and I had the Japanese French Toast and, we felt it was a moral imperative to try to the hashbrowns. Every. Single. Thing. Was so delicious. The sesame butter with the bits of nori and green tea ice cream on the Japanese french toast was a symphony of flavors! The muffins under the benedict were so perfectly crispy and buttery and the "hashbrowns?"....otherworldly. In fact, we'd recommend calling them something else so normal hashbrowns don't feel bad about themselves. And then they brought out a little panna cotta with a candle in it because it was my birthday and that was mind-blowingly delicious, too. Our server and the manager?..owner?...lovely woman who was clearly in charge?....were both a delight and seemed genuinely invested in our enjoyment of our experience. And, just in case you're still reading...the benedict came with these potatoes that were most assuredly the result of a deal with the devil. They were imbued with a gently garlicky saltiness that made them their own experience. There was no part of our experience that felt like an afterthought. Bravo!! (PS....as a trans person, it was also one of the few times on our trip to South Dakota where I felt safe and welcome.)”

“Fresh oysters for breakfast…in South Dakota? Yes, please! My wife and I stumbled upon this gem on a recent trip through the Black Hills. A note about the restaurant from their website: Erik and Camillia opened Hjem A.M. in 2022 with one goal in mind: bring amazing breakfast food to the Black Hills. The food’s focus is seasonality and is inspired by Scandinavian/American flavors. “Hjem” means home in Danish. Camillia and Erik found their home in Custer and want to be your home in the morning. Everything was divine. We wanted to sample the menu so we ordered “The Bob” (pancakes with lemon cream and lingonberry), Lobster eggs Benedict which they were out of unfortunately so the gave us some oysters as an apology. Their quiche of the day was a Mexican inspired elote style with a flaky crust and delightful crema, topped with some pickled onions. Their hollandaise was likely the best I’ve ever had. The accompanying potatoes and hash browns were perfectly cooked and seasoned. Ashly ordered a sausage patty that included a few chili flakes to wake up the tastebuds. I’d mentioned Ashly’s birthday and they brought out a birthday treat - rice pudding topped with dried apricots and granola. And a candle on the side. We certainly felt at home at this lovely place. It had a charming decor and the service was top notch. Be sure to stop by on your next trip to the Black Hills.”

“I’ve had a lot brunches in a lot of cities in recent years, as well as a lot in our hometown of Chicago. This may have been the best I can remember. Sashimi deviled eggs were balanced and interesting. The red hot chicken and waffles were well executed and, again, had a nice balance with the vinegar of the hot sauce, sweetness of the syrup and waffles, and fat of the fried chicken. Hash browns too were surprisingly interesting. I’d recommend this brunch as a must in the area.”

“We went for Valentine's day. They had a special lobster eggs benedict on the menu. It was loaded with lobster. I had the morning crepes. Everything was delicious. The coffee was amazing. Our server, Chenoa, was absolutely delightful.”

“In the world where too much breakfast restaurants serve food with the label "just add water,heat and serve" this place feels like a breath of fresh air. It's genuinely refreshing to find the place where they use real ingredients and there is intention behind every plate. Everything felt nourishing, comforting and joyful. For me personally, deviled eggs where the star of the show. Hollandaise sauce was probably the best I ever had. Pancakes that blow your socks off. All in all if you care about ingredients and quality this is the place for breakfast. Next to Skogen (which is sister restaurant) they are two best places to eat in Custer and further.”
