Cow Hollow, San Francisco, CA · $$
A neighborhood restaurant using a wood burning oven to turn seasonal ingredients into beautifully simple dishes. We start with just the good stuff, add some meticulously curated wines and a whole lotta village kindness. Great meals start with great farmers, roasters, brewers and winemakers who understand Mother Earth and her seasons like few do. Eat what you love. Do it with thought, do it with the season, and whenever you can, do it with others.
“Super warm team. Nice they do a half-off appetizer special for solo diners. Rockfish & cabbage were 10/10. Always a great vibe and farm fresh.”
“I found this place on Google Maps after dropping my wife off in San Francisco. I was hungry and wanted to try something new. Camino Alto is a smallish restaurant with a cool mellow vibe. They were busy, so I chose to dine solo at the bar. The menu was loaded with interesting options and I settled on the pork belly. I made a good choice. The food was delicious. The house coriander limeade was also quite tasty and to top it off, the pot du crème was amazing. The prices were reasonable and the staff is friendly and attentive. I would definitely go back the next time I am in San Francisco.”
“Came here last night for a birthday meal. I appreciated all the GF and DF options. I thought the food was fresh and creative however it was a bit pricey. It is SF and of course I'm sure the rent and cost to run a business is high. Enclosed back patio with lots of potted plants was cozy and warm atmosphere. The pork very shoulder was basically Carnitas with black beans and guacamole with tortillas - thought that was pricey at $39 however I'm sure the difference is in the organic grass fed pig it came from. The limeade with coriander seeds - needed more coriander infused flavor and needed to be a touch sweeter to my taste - tasted too healthy. Should've asked for simple syrup. Most of us had the rockfish / black cod / salmon. The rockfish was delicious and beautifully cooked with a nice sauce, the crispy rice - a good change in texture however it sticks to your teeth. The black cod portion is small with half of the plate covered in microgreens. The beet hummus - bright and delicious. The salmon looked good in terms of presentation and portion however I did not taste it. The seed bread (GF) was hearty and healthy.”
“I visited Camino Alto and really liked the concept at first — order at the counter, then find your own table. The patio is pet-friendly, which is a big plus. However, the experience quickly became frustrating. After sitting down, we had to get up and walk to the front for water. Then again for sugar when we ordered coffee. Having to repeatedly go back and forth for basic things takes away from the experience. The food is okay — interesting flavors, but nothing memorable. If customers are expected to self-serve water, utensils, napkins, and more, it makes you question why a tip is being charged. A simple fix would be adding a service station in the patio. Overall, good concept, but the execution needs improvement.”
“Came here based on online reviews and left disappointed in the quality of food for the price (~$80 per person excluding tip). Almost all of the dishes had one component that failed on execution - perhaps a reflection of the timing for when we arrived (Friday evening). As a general note, each dish was salted very heavily, teetering on the line of being overly salted. Tuna Ceviche with tortilla chips - tuna was fresh and the ceviche showed quality ingredients, however the tortilla chips had no snap at all and were chewy. A previous review called these “limp and leathery” and I would agree! Glassy potato - the flavour of the aioli was good, the potatoes were however overly fried and crunchy. The table next to us ordered the same dish around 20 minutes later and we saw that their potatoes were less brown / crispy looking. Rockfish with crispy rice - this was average, the fish was tepid. Halibut on romesco - the fish and sauce were fine, the flavor profile was similar to the rockfish. The beans were lovely. The radicchio however was so charred/burnt and tasted so bad that it was inedible.”
