Located just east of downtown Walla Walla, K Vintners is literally on Charles’ doorstep. Maybe you’ve been lucky enough to have a tasting in his garage, which now doubles as House of Smith’s wine library and hidden gem of a tasting room. Marked from the road by a giant—what else—capital ‘K’, the vineyards themselves are equal parts pet project and origin story. Phil Lane Vineyard: Planted with Charles’ signature varietal Syrah, there’s just two acres of active vineyard on site, meaning Phil Lane produces a very limited, and exclusive, amount of wine. Nestled back behind a small creek, Charles’ OG HQ is surrounded by trees even older than the house itself. The vineyard is named for one Phil Lane Sr., the original landowner who raised his family on the property. Phil Sr.’s colorful past, which includes amateur and professional boxing, being the first Native American to obtain a degree in forestry, not one but two citations from President Lyndon B. Johnson, and a passion for training quarter horses, provides an obvious lineage of excellence for his namesake.
“Fabulous winery with a very cool library to explore”
“We had a fantastic experience with Josh tasting some of the best wine we had in walla walla. Josh had an excellent knowledge of the history of the K vintners wine and what makes it so special. The line up was the best we had in 3 days of wine tasting here. We had been to K several times over the last 20 years but this was the best tasting and host we have ever had. If you come to walla walla you cant miss this little gem and hopefully Josh will be your host.”
“Joshua was a delight and we had a great time at our tasting today!”
“We already knew we liked many of the wines the House of Smith is the umbrella for (including K vintners, wines of substance and others). So visiting the original vineyard just outside of Walla Walla felt like a must now that we're in the neighborhood for a few days. All I can say: good choice! We sat outside in the sun and could choose from 3 flights. The Spring flight ($20, waived on purchase of a bottle or 2), the Syrah flight (K Syrah, Syrah, Syrah, Syrah, Syrah), at $40 (also waved if you buy wine) or the Library flight (highlighting K wine potential once it has aged 7-8 years. $50.-, not waved on purchase). We chose the Spring flight and the library flight and shared. Not a level playing field when switching from one to the other, but both had some wines we really loved. Highly recommended visit. Parking on site, bathroom available, wheelchair accessible. No food on the menu, but you could bring your own snacks... (Outside seating is at picnic tables).”
“We had a fun tasting experience at K Vintners! Large wine selection to taste from and it was interesting to compare older and newer vintages side by side. The $250 spend (for 2 people) to waive tasting fees is steep and I wish that would have been communicated in the reservation process so we knew what to expect. Otherwise great experience!”
