Maligne (Mah-leen) is a mixture of contemporary European and classic American dining, it’s an approachable fine dining restaurant. Inspired by the warm and generous hospitality Chef Klaus Georis witnessed in his childhood, along with his work in Michelin-star restaurants on two continents. Klaus and his team now bring the excellence and accessibility of dining to their community. “Maligne” derives from the French word for “clever,” “sly,” or even “troublesome,” indicating that Chef Georis is eager to put his own playfully irreverent spin on contemporary gastronomy. We at Maligne look forward to serving you. Wednesday - Saturday 5:00pm - 9:00pm Sunday 3:00pm - 7:00pm Reservations recommended. Walk-ins welcome upon availability.
“Delicious food and drink. The 4 star on the atmosphere was due to the sidewalk going up to it. There was lots of dog stuff someone had stepped in Inside was nice although a chair did keep yanking my hair out. I had a filtered Margarita that was delicious to start. We started with a salad with pecans and citrus, baked Brie, asparagus, shrimp cocktail. All very good . Then we shared the pork fava beans and mushrooms dish, sorels. Our guests had a polenta small plate and also the pork dish. For desert our guests had a had the white pudding stuff and we had the tiramisu which was huge. We all agreed that it was the best restaurant food we’d had in along time and put it above some others favorites. The service was excellent bringing everything on time and kept water in our glasses also polite and neet. We had reservations and were seated immediately.”
“Every dish was a delight! Weekend trip to Monterey to do some whale watching with the fam…. Looking for a nice dinner place, found a table for 5 in this restaurant. Turned out to be a memorable meal! The whole branzinho a la poivre was the best we have ever eaten. The appetizers, especially the beets, were fantastic. The yams were quite a surprise - smoky and flavorful. The lamb was succulent and tender, with an amazing sauce, the thickness of the slices were just right. Scallops and clams also had a wonderful flavor. We almost licked the plates off. Even the desserts were thoughtfully made! I think we might just have to visit again, even if it’s a couple of hours from the Bay Area. Kudos to the chef!”
“Hard to know exactly how to rank this place, the food was excellent and the old-fashioned was probably the best I've had to date but I also feel like nothing about the meal was particularly memorable. The whole branzino was a little too salty, though I did enjoy it. Enjoyed my smoked beet salad too and again, I keep going back to that old-fashioned, but that's really all.”
“Had this one on the list to try. The wife's birthday seemed like a great opportunity for a special night out at Michelin Bib restaurant. Made a reservation weeks in advance, they do charge a $25 per person upfront fee to hold the reservation. The $50 was returned to my account by the time week we got to our car. We were greeted and seated promptly at a table right next to the open kitchen, which was a fun to peak in at the cooking dance going on. Our waiter advised us the food portions were intended to be shared. We both ordered specialty cocktails from the drink menu, a tad pricey at $20 and $22. Our food was tasty and prepared exactly as you would expect from a Michelin Bib Gourmand. If your hungry, a salad and two entrees might not leave you satisfied. I wish the portions had been a tad bigger. Maybe next it's the Royale With Cheese.”
“Visiting the Central Coast for the first time, we decided to try Maligne since it was one of Seaside’s best rated restaurants. We love trying new places and are generally not picky eaters. The atmosphere was beautiful, but unfortunately the service was quite disappointing. Our server checked in on us maybe three times the entire evening and never asked if we wanted another drink or a water refill. The food was good and we enjoyed everything, but nothing really stood out as great. The service definitely took away from the experience. The oysters were very fresh and the grilled scallops were cooked perfectly. They also had a clarified margarita on the cocktail menu that was delicious.”
