Located amongst rolling hills, abundant wildlife, century-old oak trees and native wildflowers, The Salt Lick is a favorite amongst Austin-area barbecue joints. If you’ve done any research around the aforementioned topic, you’ve likely seen a photo or two of their enormous open-pit (built in the shape of a water well), where The Salt Lick team has smoked their meats since 1967. The recipes, from beef ribs to the pulled pork sandwich, have been passed down through many generations.
“Absolutely incredible BBQ experience at The Salt Lick! The brisket was perfectly smoked, tender, juicy, and packed with amazing flavor. The beef ribs were massive and fell right off the bone, while the bison ribs were something special — rich, smoky, and unforgettable. The half BBQ chicken was cooked perfectly with crispy skin and juicy meat all the way through. And the creamy mac and cheese was the perfect side dish, rich, cheesy, and comforting. Every bite tasted authentic and made with care. Great atmosphere, fantastic food, and definitely a spot worth coming back to again and again!”
“What can I say, me and my man love some meaty food. This place was very very very good. Born in Texas I was showing my boyfriend from way up north some texas bbq and this place was on our lil road trip adventure. I am a sucker for ribs and wanted him to have that experience. He loved it, as did I, the beef, the bison, the pork...mmm; the service was super nice and truthfully we will be back for future adventures. Definitely give this place a try if you are looking for bbq ribs oh and brisket. As for sides there was nice bread to help the breakdown to eat more and the Mac and cheese...should I say more? Delicious. >:3”
“Delicious food. Great service. I had a much better experience here compared to the southwest Austin location. The beef ribs were incredible. I didn't care for the sausage. We were in a group of about 20-25 people and our servers were incredibly patient and courteous despite the incredible challenge presented. Thank you!”
“If you’re a brisket lover, The Salt Lick - Round Rock is a must-visit. Brisket is my favorite, and they absolutely do it right—tender, flavorful, and cooked perfectly every single time. What really makes this place stand out is how consistently good everything is. The sides are just as impressive, and the mac and cheese is especially fantastic—it pairs perfectly with the BBQ. The atmosphere has that classic Texas BBQ feel, making it a great spot to relax and enjoy a meal with family or friends. Every visit feels like a true BBQ experience. If you’re anywhere near Round Rock or Austin and want high-quality, authentic BBQ, this place is definitely worth the visit. I’ll absolutely be coming back.”
“($80+)Its been about 7 years since we've ate here. The last time I ordered a beef ribs. It was tender, big, well smoked. We revisited and i ordered the the beef rib & bison rib. what a joke. Both look and tasted like they've been reheated and sat for a couple of days. Nothing but grease coats the mouth. Dry. Not tender. Chewy. I asked for a different rib since it was disgusting & they brought back an equal. What a shame. This place use to be so good. The Pictures I attached are the ribs they served up . Ive included a picture of my ribs I smoked up. Which would yall rather have. Never going to this place again. The last 2 pictures are of my delicious ribs”
