Located at the end of Milk Street in a historic former grain mill, this 250-seat restaurant and gastropub boasts two stunning floors and two bars accented by exposed brick and beams and a warm design that makes it the perfect gathering spot for food, drinks, and fun. The first floor includes a brick patio that overlooks the lush Rose F. Kennedy Greenway and panoramic al fresco style windows, along with leather banquette seating, comfy high top tables, and large hand-crafted wood tables perfect for large groups. The downstairs has the intimate feel of a wine cellar with its granite foundation walls, exposed beams, and an open kitchen. Originally designed by Boston icon Charles Bulfinch, the building was constructed in 1816 and much of the historic charm has been worked into the concept, design, and decor. Designer Kelly (Glynn) Laurence has described her latest innovation as, “…a place where rustic and modern elements meld seamlessly to create a casually-stylish environment.” She adds, “Historic granite blocks, exposed brick, massive wooden beams complemented by contemporary touches... create a bright, inviting, and character-filled space for tourists, families, and traditionalist Bostonians alike.” The welcoming atmosphere is reaffirmed with clever, locally-focused gastronomic offerings, including an emphasis on Slow Food principles, fresh seafood, farmer’s market produce, and dynamic presentations. There is a focus on healthy preparations while classic comfort food concepts are enhanced by unique complements. The Granary Tavern is open daily for lunch, dinner, after work crowds, dining, late night snacking, and is a great place to meet for cocktails and conversation. Brunch is also offered on Saturdays and Sundays.
“Great early dinner at the Granary Tavern with my parents and husband. We had an indoor reservation but they let us sit down 20 minutes early outside. The Cobb salad was fresh and delicious, the Boston dip sandwiches were tender and the fries were good too. The clam chowder was heavy on the milk and potato—rich and flavorful but probably not the heartiest clam chowder in town. The outdoor patio atmosphere was perfect and the service was quick and friendly. The restaurant opens its doors to the open air, so even indoor dining would feel al fresco on summer nights.”
“Last night, on a rainy Sunday, 18 of us ladies got off a sunset cruise for a ladies’ night out. The sunset cruise was disappointing, and we were all walking around trying to find a place to eat. Matt welcomed us in, gathered his staff, and in no time we were settled in with laughter and fun. Eliana and Stefany were amazing — taking our orders, getting us seated, and being so attentive throughout the evening. A big kudos to the kitchen staff for cooking for us when it was almost time for them to go home. Each and every dish was fabulous. Thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts. You made our evening very special.”
“Every dish we tried was outstanding, but the clam chowder truly set the tone—rich, perfectly balanced, and comforting without being heavy. The meatballs were incredibly tender and flavorful, and the fish and chips were some of the best I’ve had, with a crisp, light batter and perfectly flaky fish. The short rib pappardelle was a standout, featuring melt-in-your-mouth short rib in a deeply satisfying sauce that clung beautifully to the pasta. The house burger was equally impressive—juicy, well-seasoned, and cooked to perfection. Dessert somehow managed to raise the bar even higher: the bread pudding was absolutely phenomenal and the perfect ending to an exceptional meal. What truly elevated the experience was our server, Estephanie, who was attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely warm throughout the meal. Her excellent service made an already incredible dining experience even better. Highly recommend this place—both for the food and the hospitality.”
“A very nice spot! Got the oysters with some sides to share with others and they were really good (although I would recommend skipping the combination with the red sauce, that just kills the taste). The service was great although sometimes a bit slow and the overall vibe was also very nice!”
“The restaurant has a cool vibe. Very simple brick interior/ exterior but clean and gives it its own charm. Menu is small but has a good variety for everyone to find something. Prices are reasonable and not outrageous. Service was quick and prompt. Good place to stop for a bite to eat.”
