Birdhouse is a Farm to Table restaurant in the Rose Hill neighborhood of Charlottesville.
“Perfect casual, cozy spot with a fabulous concept and excellent food. The food is served Family style. The two of us shared a half roasted chicken, their fabulous sourdough bread (order it- it’s worth it), a leaf salad with house-made mustard vinaigrette dressing, a grapefruit salad with olive tapenade and toasted pistachios (this was a special and crazy good) as well as their side of au gratin potatoes (yumm!). We shared a bread pudding dessert with their house-made roasted pear ice cream. Lovely date night or friends gathering spot. Would not recommend bringing children. Attentive, informed and super friendly service.”
“This is now on rotation! What a great place. We lucked into a last minute reservation. Service was impeccable. Food was amazing! Saw room for the olive oil cake with fresh whipped cream. It is amazing. My only regret is that we didn’t get to try ALL the sides. They all looked amazing.”
“Before I give my review let me acknowledge the warm inviting staff who instantly made us feel welcomed. Ok let's get into the food...The starter included a delicious surprise in the chicken confit. I am sure you will not be disappointed if you try this open faced sourdough chicken delight with shallots. Next stop was a rotisserie chicken (dark) paired with braised collards. The skin was crispy and the chicken was juicy as expected. Everything tasted just as good as it looked if not better. The warm environment invites conversations and family time as there are no distractions like television. The chef (from Romania) was friendly and knew exactly what he was doing. The mac and cheese had a delicious pecorino that is the spark of the dish. The olive oil cake with fig whip and candied kumquat made our day! This cozy restaurant is a must visit and you are welcome in advance.”
“I think for a lot of people this restaurant could be 5 stars. The food was prepared very well and the service was great. But the seating feels really on top of each other and I never got a wow moment from the food. I think this could be due to the style of food - it felt very farm to table. Lots of mellow flavors, lots of butter & oil. We enjoyed our experience but I don’t think we’ll return. Very large wine selection, small beer & cocktail selection. Side note - the location is very odd - it’s almost a small house on an industrial street. It didn’t feel unsafe or anything, but certainly a curious walk coming from downtown.”
“Birdhouse offers a unique, home-style dining experience that clearly prioritizes quality ingredients and thoughtful preparation. The food is generally well-executed, with the rotisserie chicken and sides frequently standing out for their flavor and care in preparation. Many reviews highlight the warm, welcoming staff and the cozy, neighborhood feel of the space. That said, there are some consistent trade-offs that are hard to overlook. Portions tend to be on the smaller side relative to the pricing, which can make the overall value feel uneven depending on what you order. This aligns with feedback noting that while the food is good, it may not always feel like a satisfying amount for the cost. The seating situation is another limitation. The space is quite small, and tables can feel close together, which reduces comfort and privacy during the meal. While some people appreciate the intimate, “at-home” atmosphere, others find it a bit cramped. Overall, Birdhouse sits in a middle ground: quality ingredients and solid execution, but with pricing and seating that may not work for everyone. It’s worth trying once for the food, but expectations should be adjusted regarding portion size and dining comfort.”
