A “go-to” for New Yorkers seeking authentic Greek chic experience, this bar/eatery offers original Hellenic specialties with a modern sensibility; “hospitable” owners, modest tabs and a “casual”, “pleasant” setting with outdoor seating and Bar help keep it “popular.”
“I love this spot! I've had the open face salmon sandwich, eggs benny, & baklava pancakes (all during brunch visits) and all amazing! I can't wait to go back for dinner soon!”
“There are thousands of restaurants in New York and yet I find myself here about once a month and for every special occasion. Ovelia is a delightful gem with fantastic Greek food that feels contemporary and fresh. While many restaurants have a single item I gravitate towards, I have had almost every dish on the menu here, all are good, and the rotating specials are delightful. The cocktails are award winning and the taste fresh and refreshing. The food is warming in the winter, and in the summer the patio is the best street level patio in Astoria, on a busy pedestrian corner perfect for people watching. The chicken and lamb dishes both melt in your mouth, and the salmon is surprisingly perfectly cooked with a fantastic orzo. The sandwiches are also great and big, when I’m a bit less hungry but still want to stop by. The brunch is also delicious. Aesthetically the restaurant is unique and not trendy, a bit classy, but homey at the same time, with nice copper tables, leather backed menus, and beautiful decor around the restaurant and bathroom. When my partner’s 75-year old mother visited Astoria for the first time from Long Island, this is where we took her, and while she wasn’t familiar with Greek food she ended up loving everything she tasted and it gave her a more positive impression of “city living.” The service is welcoming and they treat you like family regardless of who you are. Prices are appropriate for the quality. I wish I could say more, I honestly can’t think of a more wonderful restaurant.”
“What an incredible dinner experience. Our server Gabby was such a special part of our visit to Ovelia. She was so knowledgeable on the menu & recommended the best dishes! We shared mussels, halloumi fries, & the thinly cut lamb chops (which were SO delicious.) I am not from the US and lamb is usually smelly here, but this lamb reminded me of home! The Grexican is a really yummy mezcal cocktail to go with your meal. Thank you Gabby for making our experience so wonderful & putting together a wonderful selection of dishes for us. Cant wait to come back and try other things on the menu!”
“A true staple in Astoria Queens. One of the best spots for lunch, dinner and brunch!! The owners are wonderful and their team is exceptional, specially Kolleen, the manager. She’s the best!! Pete and Chris have truly outdone themselves with the location and the food. Been here plenty of times, the cocktails are excellent and the food is delicious.”
“We’ve been wanting to check out this place for a while! The food was good. The dip trio was good, with the standout being the Kafteri. The hummus and tzatziki were fine but nothing to write home about. The saganaki was also good, but very rich and sweet - I’d say you really need at least 4 people to make this one worth it. For entrees, we got the lamb special, country style chicken & fried calamari. The lamb and chicken were great but I wasn’t the biggest fan of the calamari or the sauce it came with. The main issue I had was the service. Our server was incredibly dry and not personable. I don’t think he smiled once and just overall seemed like he didn’t want to be there. For how much you’re paying at this place, I’d expect to at least be treated a little better.”
