Restaurateurs Akiva Elstein and Matthew Abramcyk have created a vibrant, timeless environment to enjoy innovative cocktails, oysters and Mediterranean-influenced small plates. After sixteen years, they are bringing the downtown energy of Smith & Mills to Rockefeller Center, with an expanded raw bar selection and a private dining room. The same keen interest in Bauhaus and Constructivism and reverence for industry and design remain, serving as continued inspiration for a restaurant that brings something new while paying respect to the past. Centered around a stunning oblong bar, the space is encircled with lush velvet banquettes to encourage lingering over classic cocktails and conversation. Smith & Mills’ soft lighting and turn-of-the-century details will transport you to a place faraway – that already feels like home. Open Monday through Saturday for dinner and late-night drinks, with lunch available Tuesday through Friday
“Truly adorable find, on Xmas day! They squeezed us in with no reservations! The food was well crafted. The atmosphere is 1940s Manhattan- even the bathroom is retro. Planning on going back for Valentines Day- this time with reservations for the table but none for the quality of the experience!”
“An oasis in the city, on the lower level beside Rockefeller skating rink! I made a resy online within 30 min on Sat afternoon. Mocktails or cocktails and a menu with oysters rockefeller. Great service. Take the outdoor elevator from rock plaza down or enter from 30 Rock lobby and go down 1 flight. Be sure to use the lav - it’s unique!”
“Great service and French onion soup! Strongly recommend doing the lunch set ad it helps save some nosey on the way. The shellfish could have used more sauce but the bread provided was amazing dipped in the soup we ordered from the lunch set. Strongly recommend the chicken croquettes as well.”
“My friends and I tried this for dinner because one friend has visited for lunch and likes it. I was not so enthralled. The menu is small, which is not a problem in and of itself, but we didn't feel it was worth the prices. I've attached a photo of my Cavatelli entree, for which I was charged $29. The photo is how it was delivered to the table. The portion didn't even cover the bottom of the plate! The flavor was OK, but I needed a lot of parmesan to punch it up. My friend had the roast beef sandwich, also at $29, and he too was unimpressed with the portion for that price. The flavor of that was pleasing and it came with a small portion of house-made chips that were good. My friend liked his martini which came with a separate flask to make it dirty. The service was adequate, but the server's reaction to almost every request, was negative - seemed to be more interested in why things couldn't be done instead of making an attempt. All in all this was a remarkably average experience.”
“Disappointed by the lack of transparency here. I stopped in for a drink on a weekday afternoon and the bartender automatically added a mandatory 20% gratuity to my check. There was absolutely no notice of this policy on the menu or anywhere at the bar. I understand auto-gratuity for large parties or holidays, but for a single order on a slow weekday, it feels deceptive. Check your bills carefully.”
