A dynamic chef with a gift for building complex flavors, Aneesa Waheed has been putting her own visionary stamp on Moroccan food for 12 years as Tara Kitchen’s founder and executive chef. Her modern, accessible take has converted diners across six Tara Kitchen locations—Tribeca; New York’s Capital Region; Wildwood, NJ; and her native Hyderabad, India—into aficionados of the cuisine. Ironically, Aneesa, a former publishing professional, never dreamed of becoming a chef. Instead, her accidental career in food began with a love story: She was on vacation in Morocco when fell in love with the food, and with her husband, Muntasim Shoiab, a Pakistani-expat living there. Taking a leap of faith, the couple married, and Aneesa spent the next year flying from New York to Marrakech to visit him while waiting for approval of his U.S. visa. It was on these visits that Aneesa honed her Moroccan cooking knowledge and skills, thanks to local friends, visits to the world-famous Jma el-Fna market, and trips throughout the country, where she learned about traditional cooking methods, ingredients, unique spice combinations, and flavor profiles. It was also there where the seeds of Tara Kitchen were sown: the dream of making this complex, ancient cuisine as widely known and beloved in the U.S. as others (such as Indian)—by packing flavor into every dish while simplifying processes and using widely available ingredients alongside traditional ones.
“We visited this Moroccan gem as a group of 8 coworkers to celebrate a birthday, and it was such a lovely experience from start to finish. We made a reservation two days in advance, and when we arrived, they were ready and waiting for us, such a great first impression! We ordered a variety of dishes: rice chicken bowl, boneless chicken, golden chicken, shrimp pil pil, Moroccan shepherd’s pie, and lamb kebab. Every single dish was flavorful and satisfying. I personally had the shrimp pil pil, and it was perfectly spicy with a rich, bold flavor, just the way I like it. The portions were generous, and we didn’t have to wait long for our food, which made the whole experience even better. After such a hearty meal, we were hesitant to order tea, but we’re so glad we did! We shared two pots of Moroccan tea, and it was the perfect way to end the meal—refreshing, great for digestion, and served in the cutest little glasses. The ambiance was authentic and full of charm, with a warm, welcoming vibe. The staff were incredibly attentive and kind, even surprising the birthday guest with a beautiful slice of cake, a candle, and a sweet gesture involving singing, such a thoughtful touch! We’re already planning to come back and try more dishes. Highly recommend this place for anyone looking for delicious Moroccan food and a genuinely lovely dining experience.”
“I haven't even left the restaurant and felt the need to leave a review. The drinks, food and dessert is phenomenal. First time having Moroccan food and I enjoyed it, I had the chicken a l'orange, looking forward to coming back. My lychee martini was so good I needed another. I got the tres leche and my friend got the flour less chocolate and oh man we took our time.”
“Amazing restaurant with excellent food and I'm excited to come here again. We came here as a group of 5 and loved every single dish we ordered. Our apps included the (1) Spicy Chickpea Bowl, Ras Fries, Spinach Briouats and Spicy Shawarma Hummus. The briouats filling' was a lovingly creamy texture due to the spinach and cheese with an amazing and complex garlic flavor, all wrapped in flaky phyllo. It also came with a spicy sauce which I even used with the pita I thought was brilliant. The spicy shawarma hummus was also delightfully creamy and served with pita. It wasn't grainy at all and I'd even describe the taste as delicate and nuanced- not too spicy at all. The chickpeas and fries were simple but great- I'd like the fries to come with a little more seasoning or mix the seasoning more evenly, but there was another spicy harissa-based sauce it came with that was great. Our entrees were the (1) Chicken a l'Orange, (2) White Fish and Bouillabaisse, (3) Shepherd's Pie, and the (4) Lamb Tagine Makfoul. Overall, the portions of all the entrees were huge! Almost all of us took our meals home, and that's not because they were loaded with carbs. The orange chicken dishes had an amazing natural-tasting orange sauce that had a nice amount of heat with tender on-the-bone chicken and couscous. The shepherd's pie was also amazing with smooth potatoes and a very complex sauce which had a similar super warming heat to it. The lamb tagine had so much meat and the cinnamon and honey were perfectly balanced to the dish and came with a bowl of rice. I've eaten many different cuisines in Manhattan and this restaurant is among the best.”
“I was looking for an authentic Moroccan experience after our trip to Morocco earlier this year and Tara Kitchen was a great choice. I was specifically looking for appetizers and entrees I tried on our vacation which led me to order Shrimp pil pil and lamb meatballs with poached eggs. Everything was delicious. I would visit again. We had the vegan chocolate cake dessert with pistachio mousse and a mango cheesecake.”
“The ambiance was very nice. Going in my date and I both did not know what to expect. She is Moroccan and I am not so we both were curious to try "Moroccan-ish" food. She enjoyed her Shepard pie a lot! I ordered a lamb kebab (It was a month back maybe in forgetting some details) and the flavor of the meat was outstanding, however I did not enjoy the bed of rice it lay on. The rice was not prepared poorly, quite the opposite, however it did have some flavors I was not used to. It tasted very flowery and earthy, which for some people sounds great but since I have never had rice like that before it bright down the dish for me. My date loved the rice though so I don't think it was objectively bad, probably not my taste. In a small space there is only so much seating you can fit, I didn't feel cramped but I didn't necessarily feel like I had too much space. This is a nonissue for other people since I am very tall myself. I would go back here again 100%. I regret not trying whatever tagines were offered, as I am sure those would have been amazing. Overall I enjoyed the experience and you can feel the craft put into each dish by chef Aneesa Waheed.”
