Silk City Diner & Lounge has a long history in Philadelphia. In 1954, the Diner was installed at its current location, next to a cocktail lounge at 5th & Spring Garden Streets. The Diner & Lounge ran for over 50 years until in 2006, the owners decided to close down and sell it. Enter Mark Bee. As a resident of the block, and already a successful restauranteur (having opened North 3rd 5 years earlier), Mark bought the property and spent the next year creatively re-working the space into its current form. Keeping the name “Silk City Diner & Lounge” Mark reopened the space in Late Spring 2007. In addition, within the next few years, Mark turned what had been a gravel parking area into one of Philadelphia’s most popular outdoor dining destinations, renaming the business to “Silk City Diner, Lounge, & Garden”
“I recently celebrated my 40th birthday at Silk City, and once again, it reminded me why I've been coming here since the early 2000s. Silk City never fails me. One thing to know if it's your first time visiting: the diner, outdoor garden, and lounge are connected but operate a little differently. Even if you're dining in the outdoor garden area, you'll still need to pay separate admission to enter the lounge later, so keep that in mind. Because my party was pretty large, Silk City accommodated us with a back section that felt almost like a private event space for my family and friends. It was perfect for our celebration. Service was fast, attentive, and efficient, and the space was large enough to comfortably fit everyone in our group. I brought my own birthday cake and learned that they charge $3 per slice if you'd like the staff to cut and serve it. No complaints—just something worth knowing ahead of time. I chose to skip that service. As for the food, I ordered the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and spinach (it normally comes with collard greens, but that's not my thing). This has been one of my favorite meals here since around 2011, and I'm happy to say it tastes exactly as good as I remember. The fried chicken was seasoned to perfection with a crispy, flavorful crust. The mashed potatoes were smooth, creamy, and absolutely delicious. Even the spinach was well-seasoned and surprisingly flavorful. Everyone else in my party seemed happy with their meals as well. After dinner, we wandered into the diner area, which is one of my favorite parts of Silk City. It's got a cute retro vibe with vintage-style seating and a classic diner feel. It's tucked right between the outdoor dining area and the lounge, making it a great place to grab a drink, hang out, or enjoy a meal. We stopped at the bar for drinks and had a great time there before heading into the lounge. A quick tip: if you're planning to go into the lounge, buy your entry sooner rather than later. The admission price tends to increase throughout the night. Once we got onto the dance floor, though, it was completely worth it. The DJ kept the music going all night, the crowd was fun, and the energy was amazing. Several of my friends said they hadn't partied like that since college. The dance floor stayed packed, everyone was dancing, and the DJ was playing hit after hit. The drinks were flowing, the vibes were right, and everyone was having an amazing time. Whether you're looking for good food, a nostalgic diner experience, or a fun night out dancing, Silk City continues to be one of Philadelphia's most reliable spots. After more than 20 years of visiting, I can honestly say: Silk City still delivers.”
“Went here last Saturday for brunch I sat at the bar in the garden area. For a beautiful day, it wasn't crowd and the vibes were relaxed. The food was great. I had the brisket omelet and avocado toast with a cucumber mint spritzer. The bartender was awesome. I can't wait to return.”
“Boyfriend and I visited from NY for a concert, wandering around looking for dinner we stumbled on Silk City. From the second we walked up to the door the atmosphere captured us. The liberal use of fairy lights and viney plants creates a super chill vibe, seating is comfortable and tables are spacious. Now the food..oh god the food.. We ordered a Buffalo Brussels app, a Short Rib Grilled Cheese & Creamy Tomato Soup, a Mushroom Quesadilla, a side of Jalapeño Corn Bread with Hot Honey dip, and. Banana Bread Pudding dessert. Everything was incredible, delicious, well-portioned, and fresh hot fr9m the kitchen! Absolute must visit, do not skip out on this hidden gem!”
“Went here in honor of Diners, Drive-In's and Dives and unfortunately the menu items he got weren't there anymore, but the Short Rib Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup was awesome as well as the wings!”
“Pretty good experience. Seasonal drink agave shadow had peppercorn flavor and chili bitters but didn’t really taste very spicy but not bad either! Bar tender Charles was friendly and attentive. Ambiance was good! Might have to sit inside diner part next time!”
