With Besharam, Chef/Owner Heena Patel’s culinary voice is on display with a plant-based menu that showcases her personal journey as a chef, rooted in the traditional dishes and techniques she absorbed from her mother and aunt during her upbringing and localized through seasonal California ingredients that reflect Heena’s adulthood in the Bay Area. The menu is a marriage of these experiences, continuously evolving with new inspirations while showcasing Heena’s nuanced approach. Guests are invited to join Heena on a tour through Gujarat, a lush region with a strong culinary lineage grounded in vegetarian cuisine. This heritage is showcased at Besharam through menu sections named for the major cities within: Ahmedabad, Surat, and Mumbai. The wine list and beverage program are thoughtfully composed to complement the menu with cocktails drawing inspiration from the kitchen spice cabinet. Mirroring the creative spirit of the Minnesota Street Project, Besharam features custom artwork from HateCopy pop artist Maria Qamar, who depicts the life and times of first generation Desi diaspora in her pieces.
“Awesome food. Great ambience. We especially loved the masala mushrooms, undhiyu pie & vindaloo koftas. The dal makhani was one of best we ever tasted. The platter of pickles was novel & delicious. Cucumber gimlet was super refreshing. A must try.”
“Went here for Valentine’s day! They have more spaces if you call than are shown online. The venue is slightly cramped, but we got a seat right by the kitchen, and you can see them making the food right there! Chef Heena was also there, vetting every plate. It was awesome to see the level of perfection and detail she puts into her craft. The food we got was a prix fixe, and came out to 240 for 2 people since a 22% gratuity was added, so be wary! The food was filling and they gave enough to have leftovers, which is rare for a bougier place like this. My favorite dish was the shreekhand cheesecake, but the kofta was also good! Overall solid menu that does Guju food well (as approved by my date)”
“I've been to Besharam several times now and always enjoy getting the price fix menu. I normally don't go for those sorts of bougie/omakase restaurants in SF, but I think this one is always worth the price. The presentation is gorgeous and the dishes are always interesting iterations of authentic dishes or unique fusions. I loved the Kulchas with mole sauce and the Chole from their a la carte menu. The most recent visit I had the Serradura parfait and it was amazing!”
“My parents were in town for the weekend of Diwali and we figured we would finally try out Besharam after months of wanting to. They had a special menu which we didn't order from BUT even with a smaller a la cart menu, we had an amazing time. The service is great, with the right amount of both follow-up and space. Its a little bit pricey but honestly, some of the uniqueness is worth it. The vibe is also very new yet old at the same time, and I found myself picking out plenty of pieces of decor that I know my grandma has, or that I know we used growing up which was a nice touch. Plus, plenty of parking. Now the food. They have a decent wine selection and we had a few cocktails that were very tasty but back to the food. The drunken pani puri is a refreshing start and the puris were SO crunchy! I also added on the candy Karela which somehow is my dad's favorite vegetable and if it was made like this growing up, I also would agree, another winner. We also had the Vindaloo Koftas, Dal Makhani, Maska Paneer and a cheesy garlic naan. Everything was very tasty and had a slightly different approach to dishes you've eaten before. I know the menu changes so I cannot wait to go back and try more food that as a fellow Gujju, brings back memories and also let's me make new ones!”
“Was super excited about dining here as they’ve had good reviews and a great story. The atmosphere is industrial chic and service was good, but the food was a let down. Nothing adventurous or exciting and pricey for what it is. Flavours seem muted by design to appeal to a certain taste but comes out just mid. Biggest let down is that the “pickle” aren’t actually pickles but just pickled chutney which at $5 a pop or $16 for four is a huge rip off. The cheeses garlic naan was the best dish. Everything else was kind of forgettable.”
