Ama is a mission-driven, all-day dining destination dedicated to the nourishment of its guests, its community and its planet. Led by husband-and-wife Micah Wilder & Johanna Hellrigl, Ama, which translates to “love” in Italian, takes its name from an Italian poem about leading life with love and intention – two elements felt across every touchpoint of the dining experience. An indoor-outdoor caffè and Genovese-style focacceria by day, Ama becomes an energetic aperitivo bar over the course of the afternoon and convivial ristorante by night. The result is a warm and transportive community anchor celebrating the joyful simplicities of Italian culture meant for every mood and moment.
“We discovered Ama through listening to Alex Clark’s podcast, and now I’m completely obsessed with this restaurant! So obsessed, in fact, that my husband and I came yesterday for lunch and returned again this morning for breakfast. The Insalata Verde with the Signature Herbaceous Dressing is so yummmmmm! For lunch, we ordered the minestrone with organic chicken added and the Tagliatelle al Ragù di Cuore ~ both were absolute deliciousness. Every bite tasted fresh, flavorful, and thoughtfully prepared. Breakfast was equally incredible. We enjoyed the mushroom and onion frittatas, a cornetto vuoto, and some of the best lattes we’ve had in a long time. And don’t skip dessert ~ the tiramisu is gluten-free, yet you would never guess it (made with hazelnut flour). It’s creamy, rich, and absolutely delicious! A special shoutout to Maxwell, whose service was superb. Friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, he made our visits even more enjoyable. The only minor challenge is parking, which can be a bit complicated. If you’re lucky, grab a spot at Whole Foods and pick up your groceries on the way out ~ it worked perfectly for us! We only wish we lived closer to DC because this would easily become our go-to spot multiple times a week. This place has been opened for 2 years and we wish we knew about it sooner! Highly recommend!”
“Ama was so good that we ate here twice during our trip to DC. All of the food we ordered was excellent - full of flavor, fair portions, high-quality ingredients. The ethos that Ama has regarding their sourcing of ingredients and how they care for their preparation really shines through (from their water filtration all the way to cleaning without toxic chemicals). Shout-out to Maxwell for extensive knowledge of the menu and making sure I was able to be careful about my gluten allergy. Service was great! Coffee here was top-notch and it was great to be able to enjoy a gluten-free tiramisu. Bone broth hot chocolate is a must-try, too!”
“Wonderful experience. They were super accommodating from the beginning. We tried a variety of dishes and everything was very tasty and felt a lot lighter than your traditional Italian fare. We came due to the high standards this restaurant has and they do deliver on the promise of better for you/tasty food. Even the water they filter in-house was great. Amazing experience, great location, and wonderful staff. We found a new favorite spot in the city and cannot wait to be back and recommend to anyone looking for a better alternative to traditional restaurants in the city.”
“Came to Ama with three friends for Restaurant Week and had an amazing experience. The vibe is super cute and cozy. Parking can be hit or miss, but I lucked out this time. We were supposed to stick to the Restaurant Week menu but somehow ended up ordering three different breads — all were a hit, including the pea pancake (so good). And I loved the one that’s like a pizza. For apps, the soups were solid. The minestrone was my favorite. Just a heads-up: the pasta fagioli is not like Olive Garden’s, so don’t order it expecting that. Entrees were a 10/10 — we shared the Branzino and pasta Bolognese and everything was delicious. Dessert was gelato or sorbet, and we all left very happy. Restaurant Week is back and Ama definitely delivered. Great spot for celebrations too. Our server, Gerard, was super attentive and very knowledgeable. Highly recommended — I would definitely come back and recommend this place.”
“Love the concept of this place being seed oil free and very attuned to health conscious practices. Came here with my husband for a much needed lunch date postpartum and was so excited to try it. The food was overall pretty good but the service really took away from our experience. The bone broth hot coca was delicious and awesome menu item. The crostini with anchovy was also good. And the lasagna was rich and filling. The salmon rice lunch bowl was just ok. A little off flavor wise. For dessert I was excited to try the panna cota but after ordering our server came back alerting us it wasn’t set yet. And brought us back the wrong old dessert menu so when I went to order the lemon olive oil cake instead he said it wasn’t available and brought back the correct menu. I settled on the semifreddo which was not great. Wouldn’t get again. After all that he doubled charged us for the pannacotta and semmifredo which we had to point out to get corrected. Overall the service was slow and mediocre. Maybe we’d come back for food to go or try dinner service to maybe be better. A tad disappointed.”
