Located in the Union Market neighborhood, the second outpost of Joe Carroll’s popular NYC restaurant aims to bring some of the laid back vibes of Brooklyn to Washington, DC. St. Anselm is an American tavern devoted to the pleasures of grilled meats and great ingredients simply cooked. While steak is a specialty, the creativity doesn’t stop there. Delicious food, eclectic wines (some on tap), and classic cocktails set the tone for a great experience. Paired with friendly service in an unpretentious setting adorned with quirky décor, dining at St Anselm is the total package.
“Delicious food and awesome service. The Brussels sprouts with the Caesar dressing was probably my favorite thing I’ve ever eaten. The oyster special was also good! Only thing meh would have been the mashed potatoes but I prefer creamy ones so that’s not a surprise!! The biscuits…. WOW”
“This was my second time dining at here, and they continue to impress. My first visit was so great that I knew I had to come back to celebrate my birthday with my family—and the experience was just as amazing. They are incredibly consistent. Our server Ami was fantastic and provided excellent service throughout the night. I ordered the NY strip, but we shared dishes around the table so I was able to try a bit of everything. Everything we tasted was outstanding. The highlight of the night was definitely the biscuits—they are absolutely incredible and a must-order. The cocktails were also great and paired perfectly with the meal. Overall, everything from the food to the service was exceptional. I’ll definitely be back again and sharing my experience with others.”
“This place was packed on a Thursday night with good reason— the steaks were superb. We ordered the 32-oz Prime T-Bone, the 16-oz Ribeye, and the Pork Porterhouse and they were beautiful— perfectly grilled and succulent and flavorful. You’ll also be glad to get the Baby Iceberg salad for starters as it came with heritage bacon that’s so good, as well as the especially tasty Crispy Pig Head Croquette. Overall a most happy meal.”
“St. Anselm is an American steakhouse/tavern that serves delicious steaks and comforting dishes in a relaxed setting. THE MEAL 🥮 Biscuits & Pimento: These were amazing. The biscuits have a crisp, crunchy crust protecting a decadent, soft crumb. The pimento cheese adds great creaminess, but, the side of salted Vermont butter elevated them even further. 🥩 The Steaks: • Butcher's Cut (Hanger Steak): Served medium rare with an excellent sear. Tender, juicy, and full of flavor. • New York Strip: Robust beef flavor with perfectly seared fat. • Lamb Leg: Cooked nicely to medium rare, though the pickled pepper relish was a bit overpowering. Tip: We used the onion cream sauce from the Baby Carrots dish to balance the relish. SIDES & SWEETS • Savory: The Baby Carrots (on that tasty onion cream) and the Thick-Cut Grilled Bacon were standouts. The bacon had a nice richness without being too heavy. • Sweet: Do not skip dessert. The Carrot Cake was incredibly moist, and the Toasted Marshmallow Ice Cream was a memorable finish. SERVICE ⭐ Special thanks to Abi for the warm, professional service. She understood the food and wine menu inside and out. OVERALL A great place for a business dinner or special date night. St. Anselm shares high-quality food and service at a reasonable price.”
“Love St. Anselm! The ambiance is very relaxed, a good place to go for any occasion. Those biscuits with pimento cheese, the crab deviled eggs, and steaks - I dream about them. Went with a friend on a Friday afternoon; we were immediately seated (we did have reservations). The restaurant did get incredibly busy at one point, and our server apologized for it, but to be honest, I never felt neglected. I also saw that everyone worked as a team to help one another. We started with the Buttermilk Biscuits and Pimento Cheese, Blue Crab Deviled Eggs, and the Beet & Ricotta salad. All of these were incredibly tasty; I had to be careful not to finish them all so I could save room for the steak. For our steaks, we ordered the Butcher Steak (hangar steak) and Ribeye. Both were amazing and cooked perfectly. I enjoyed the hangar steak the most. For dessert, we ordered the Carrot Cake and Chocolate Cake. We shared a bite of each. Both were phenomenal and perfectly balanced. I highly recommend!”
