With a romance that blossomed in the kitchens of New York’s most celebrated Michelin-starred restaurants, Gabe and Katherine Thompson share a love of food and family. The Thompsons – who wrote the cookbook Downtown Italian and were the chef/owners behind beloved NYC restaurants L’Artusi, dell'Anima, Anfora, and L’Apicio – bring their expertise to the table with handcrafted pastas and dishes that showcase seasonal flavors and ingredients sourced from local farmers markets. The vibe is laid back, families are welcome, and service strikes the right balance between a festive night out and a casual dinner party at your favorite neighbor's house. Thompson Italian has earned numerous accolades since opening in Falls Church 2019, including spots on the Washington Post, Washingtonian and Northern Virginia Magazine Best Restaurant lists, and a James Beard nomination for Katherine for Outstanding Pastry Chef of the Year in 2020. The second location of Thompson Italian opened in Old Town Alexandria in January 2023.
“Great handmade pasta, cooked to al dente perfection (we had the Falls Church restaurant week menu, mushroom tortelloni, rigatoni with beef Bolognese)! Also great Friday night neighborhood vibes.”
“Thompson Italians was an excellent experience. When you walk in you see a bar filled with people and then as you walk towards your left, you see a very tranquil and beautiful dining area. This dining area is filled with dim aesthetic lights. Overall, you can expect a high-end high-quality and delicious Italian dining experience as you’re offered salads, appetizers, and dishes that will make your taste buds melt. I personally had the spaghetti and it was so rich: the thick al dente noodles captured my heart and the red sauce was so flavorful, I ate my plate clean. It is safe to say, my taste buds, belly and my brain were all happy with the experience as I shared this beautiful meal with my family. Shoutout to our kind and helpful waiter, Sandro!”
“My family dined here on a weekday night to celebrate birthday. I could make same day reservation. A high chair and a booster seat were ready for my children. Parking is a problem. You have to park at whole foods garage or street parking. The atmosphere is modern and sophisticated. Bar abd dining area was separated, and I love that dining area had low noise level. My family ordered a kids spaghetti, squid ink pasta, saffron ragu pasta, and citrus salad. Bread basket came out first and the bread was really soft and chewy. Olive oil that came with it had some acidity, and I wish they kept it simple without mixing the oil with something else. Kids menu was great. Spaghetti came with carrot sticks, fries, and a cup of milk. Spaghetti was perfectly cooked and sauce was well balanced. Even my one year old could it eat it. Squid ink pasta was ok. Pasta was al dente; however, the sauce had lemon-sour taste and overall balance with clam and other ingredients was just mediocre. It tasted different from typical squid ink pasta, and it threw me off. Saffron ragu pasta was probably the best menu we ordered. Ragu sauce was great, pasta was perfectly cooked, and overall had great balance. Citrus salad was good as well but I wish the dressing was put on the side because it had too much dressing overall. The price is definitley on the higher side compared to other italian restaurants. I am interested in trying other menus at this restaurant; however, I do not understand how this restaurant won the nova italian restaurant tournament.”
“We tried out Thompsons on a Saturday night. i had to get reservations pretty far in advance as they were already booked for even a time I wanted. We did restaurant week which was about $55 a person. I wasn’t super impressed with the cocktails but the sangria was good. The croquettes were good but needed a sauce in my opinion. We loved the citrus salad. The mushroom tortelloni are my absolute favorite. We tried a red sauce pasta on the r restaurant week menu that was just okay. I also just felt the chocolate hazelnut cake and olive oil cakes were mediocre and would likely not get again.”
“Great atmosphere. Super disappointing sad food. The arancini is amazing. The boar pasta was a let down. It looked like sloppy joe and was super heavy. The chicken parm looked like it was noodles from a store cardboard box. Cheap. Honestly a joke for the price. And the rhubarb tiramisu was absolutely foul. I’m sorry to say that but I was so amped for this dinner and I was expecting all good things. Won’t be back.”
