The Sena family tradition of culinary excellence dates back to early 1947 when Carlo “Papa” Sena began to cook in postwar Naples. The family carried this experience across the Atlantic and opened La Famiglia in 1976 in the shell of a Colonial tea warehouse. Today, La Famiglia stands as the finest Italian restaurant in Philadelphia and a major landmark on the city’s vibrant restaurant scene.
“Wonderful food, wonderful service. The bone in porkchop was a beautiful dish, served with a little forest of mushrooms on top. Was so moist and delicious!”
“I dined at La Famiglia last week and had an outstanding experience from start to finish. I began with the special appetizer, Tuna Crudo con Peperoni Rossi, which was incredibly fresh, bright, and beautifully balanced—a perfect way to start the meal. For my entrée, I was fortunate enough to order one of the evening specials, Costata di Maiale con Fontina e Funghi. The pork chop was thick, juicy, and stuffed with rich fontina cheese and earthy morels. It was so tender it practically melted like butter. Actually, now that I think about it, this wasn’t my first buttery pork chop at La Famiglia—I had a similarly memorable one during a visit earlier this year. Consistency like that deserves applause. The dish was elevated even further by a beautifully executed wine reduction sauce. To complement the meal, I paired it with a young Barolo Marcenasco from Renato Ratti, which was an excellent match. My guests thoroughly enjoyed their meals as well. My niece had the Caesar Salad and Penne alla Famiglia, while my friend ordered the Vitello alla Milanese. Both were very satisfied with their dishes and left equally impressed. I passed on dessert while keeping an eye on my sugar intake, but left already looking forward to my next visit.”
“What a lovely retreat! Wonderful service and spectacular cuisine! The pappardelle pasta was truly exquisite served in a creamy gorgonzola sauce with peas. The width of this pasta was perfetto, easy to spin and enjoy! The filet was equally stupendous and cooked perfectly! The wine list is crazy huge and the service impeccable! Highly recommend La Famiglia Ristorante!!!”
“Comfort. Comfort food, great service, calm atmosphere - who would ever want to leave?!? We were visiting Philadelphia but we liked La Famiglia so much we had to come back. The front of the restaurant has a really nice little bar which we have to try next time. Main dining room is very nice and we loved being in it. The real star of the show is the food and, man was it good. However even the best food tastes better when it made with lots of love and that is what they do here. I think my favorite thing was getting prompt service without ever feeling rushed.”
“We just celebrated my husband's 90th birthday at La Famiglia, and it was absolutely wonderful! The dinner with family and friends was perfect. Honestly, the service was top-notch and the food was out of this world. This place has a special history for us—we also celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary there a few years back, and that was just as wonderful. I highly recommend La Famiglia for any big birthday or anniversary!”
