Focusing predominately on fresh local seafood with a French, Lowcountry flare, Charlie’s is the place for good food, good wine and unforgettable memories all enjoyed in a quaint French country atmosphere. A Savannah native, Charlie Golson’s interest in the French language and culture took him to Paris. After a long stint in the fast paced hotel kitchens of Washington DC, he was ready to move back closer to home. It was at that time he was able to open up a one room French bistro. The restaurant has grown over the years, but the ‘Green Star’ remains steadfast in offering the finest ingredients the Low country has to offer with a menu that is hand written daily. Resort Casual.
“The hostess greeted us and sat us promptly. Restaurant was busy but waitress let us know she’d be right with us. We ordered drinks and app. She did a great job walking us through the specials and selections. Meal was splendid. Really elevated the dish with their sauces. They gave me a complimentary dessert for my birthday and made the evening special. I am so glad we went there and will definitely be back!”
“I was intrigued by the appetizers, so I had 3 of them. Gumbo, escargot, and crab salad. My sister had a wonderful fish and we had a bottle of champagne! It was 1/2 price for wine that evening. I especially enjoyed the escargot. They were already out of the shells so I didn't have to work to eat them. And the crab salad was generously proportioned as well as yummy. Had enough to take some home. Lovely meal!”
“We loved Charlie's! This is our second time there, and both times were fantastic. The food is excellent. On this visit, we had escargot and she crab soup for starters. The escargot was buttery, garlicky, and tender. So good. The soup was buttery and not too thick—very good flavor and texture. The Cobb salad was loaded with fresh greens and generous helpings of turkey, egg, avocado, cherry tomatoes, and crispy bacon. The sweet tomato vinaigrette salad dressing was light and not overpowering—amazing, flavorful salad. My wife had Charlie's chicken salad. The chicken was tender and moist. A nice fruit display included pineapple, Granny Smith apples, and sweet oranges. The bread was chewy with a good crust. Pricing was reasonable and service was excellent. We will be back.”
“Charlie’s is one of my parent’s favorite restaurants, and they insisted that we visit during our latest trip. First impressions are good. The greeting was friendly and the seating areas were inviting. The service was good, and our orders were delivered quickly. That said, I though the food was fairly average for a ‘fancy’ French restaurant (with the notable exception of the She Crab Soup, which was excellent and better than The Pink House in Savannah in my opinion). But my (expensive) fish was overdone and dry. The accompanying beans were also over cooked and insipid. I thought the food did not overcome the nice atmosphere, but they rate an overall four stars due to the service.”
“Were booked online so were seated promptly. The noise level had us having to lean into each other to hear our conversation. We didn’t order alcoholic drinks & noticed how our server seemed to cater to the tables that did, whereas we only received service when necessary. We had ordered a club soda & it sat empty for a while, then was refilled mainly with ice, as if it was a bother to refill. So as to service, go somewhere else. However, the food was delicious. Their Duck & Monkfish are worth ordering again! We found the Espresso bitter but their desserts were perfect. The Berry Cobbler was presented beautifully along with their Creme Caramel. And we enjoyed every bite. Would we come back? Yes for the food. But probably no for the service.”
