The Winding Stair Bookshop & Café became a famous Dublin landmark in the 1970s and 1980s. Named after the Yeats poem and in honour of its winding staircase, it is overlooking the river Liffey, with an iconic view of the Ha'penny bridge. As a popular meeting place for writers, musicians and artists, it was a well known hub for debate and creativity with many poems written, novels penned and movies shot within its walls. In 2006, Elaine Murphy brought this much-loved spot back to life as a restaurant, championing seasonal, Irish produce. The bookshop, located on the ground floor, was retained, as were many of the old bookshelves, photos and memories. The room retains its timeless charm with stripped wood tables and floors, and Bentwood café chairs. The view remains as quintessentially Dublin as ever. The food is good, old-fashioned home cooking, with produce sourced from artisans within the island. Drink sare local and international craft beers & wines from stellar producers.
“A welcoming, bright restaurant with an excellent wine list and unique menu. We sat next to the windows on the third floor overlooking the Liffey, which was the perfect way to finish our time in Dublin. The staff was kind, the atmosphere was elevated but not stuffy, and the location was great for being close to everything but across the river where it’s a little quieter. The Scotch egg was divine, as was the duck with endives and leek croquette. It was nice to have the option of both snacks and starters!”
“An excellent restaurant on the second floor, over the Winding Stair Book Shop. The view of the Liffy and the Ha’penny Bridge is lovely. The food and service were excellent. This is a small place, so a reservation will be needed to secure a table.”
“Our hotel concierge got us a reservation at this restaurant. The food was excellent. Highly recommended. We had the Dingle Bay Crab as a starter which was fantastic, the Pigs on the Green pork tenderloin which was very juicy and delicious and wrapped up with the bread pudding for desert.”
“Dinner was at The Winding Stair last night, we shared 4 Starter plates, Chips with Bacon Dust, Charcuterie with Cheese Plate, Goat Cheese Salad, Crab Dip plate. All delicious!!! The pickles in Dublin are fantastic! And I absolutely love that greens are served with every dish!”
“We sat as requested in our reservation, next to the window in the middle of the facade for perfect view of the Ha penny bridge. They replay promptly in the emails. The service is really good and active. Also friendly and smart. The food is very good in terms of quality and quantity. Taste is something personal but we all happily surprised with the unbelievable combination of the sweet pickled herring. Bravo to the chef for the idea. Also the treacle bread is unique. We paid 240€ for 3 starters and 3 main + a bottle of wine.”
