Husband-and-wife team Colby and Megan Garrelts built the Rye restaurant brand as an expression of their love for Kansas City, the Midwest, and the rich culinary region they call home. The original Rye Mission Farms opened in Leawood, KS, in 2012, followed by Rye on the Country Club Plaza in 2017. While each location has its own footprint, both feature a comfortable take on urban farmhouse décor. Rye’s chef-driven comfort food menu reflects the Garreltses’ most cherished moments in the kitchen and around the table. Guests are invited to pull up a chair for favorites like our famous fried chicken with homemade pickles and ham gravy, a reserve aged steak program with family-style sides such as pan-roasted Brussels sprouts and glazed heirloom carrots, Koji-aged pork chops, shrimp & grits, and award-winning pies available by the slice or whole to-go. In 2015, the Garreltses shared many of Rye’s beloved recipes in their keepsake cookbook, Made in America: A Modern Collection of Classic Recipes. Guests can also take home Rye’s signature barbecue and hot sauces. Both Rye locations are open daily for lunch and dinner, with weekend brunch, and feature a full craft bar, outdoor and private dining spaces, cooking classes, and special events. Colby is a James Beard Foundation Best Chef: Midwest award winner and a Food & Wine Top 10 Best New Chef. His work has been featured in The Wall Street Journal and on the cover of Saveur. Chef Megan is a James Beard Award semifinalist for Outstanding Pastry Chef, with recipes featured in Bon Appétit, Food & Wine, The Wall Street Journal, and Saveur. The Garreltses are also expanding their culinary vision with Cornflower Baked Goods, a new bakery slated to open in summer 2026 in Leawood, KS. Serving Leawood, KS since 2012 in Mission Farms!
“I finally got to visit Rye in Leawood and it didn't disappoint. I had the Filet Mignon medium rare of course, almost didn't have to chew it. If I went back I would probably have that again. The service was on point and they sat us right next to the kitchen which I loved to watch them work. Thank you for a great experience”
“Monday night is steak night... Choice of two salads, choice of four steaks, choice of side, choice of pie.... All for 60 bucks? The staff knows what they're doing and the servers do a great job of taking your order. You know you're at a fine establishment when they wrap up your food to take home. I would say for steak night they have hit a home run...”
“This was my first time at Rye, and I loved it. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly. The menu has something for everyone, but seems to be heavy on steak and fried chicken. As someone gluten free, my options are limited, but my favorite was the flourless chocolate cake with espresso sauce and coffee ice cream. I would come back just for more of that.”
“Rye Leawood never misses. We love everything from the perfectly cooked steak to the iconic fried chicken. The house hot sauce is a must and the pies are hands down some of the best in Kansas City. Dessert is non-negotiable here. Tonight our server, Georgia, made the experience even better. Our entrees took a little longer than usual because of larger parties ahead of us, but she kept us in the loop and surprised us with complimentary coffees. Such a thoughtful touch and genuinely appreciated. In the summer, the patio is one of our favorite spots for apps and drinks. Great food, warm service, and a place that keeps us coming back.”
“Rye in Leawood delivers on every level. Perfect atmosphere for both work and leisure. From appetizers to dessert, every dish was excellent. The hanger steak and wedge salad stood out…steak cooked to perfection and full of flavor. Service was warm, attentive and genuinely welcoming. Loved everything about the people, the food and the place. Highly recommend.”
