“We had a private tasting (the Star Lane Experience) at Star Lane Winery to celebrate my husband’s 50th birthday, and it was absolutely perfect!! This was our first time visiting the Santa Ynez wine region, and Star Lane made the experience truly memorable. The setting is beautiful, the staff was warm and welcoming, and every wine we tasted was FANTASTIC. We enjoyed it so much that we shipped a bunch of their wine home to continue enjoying long after the trip. “After having visited numerous Napa-valley vineyards in the past, my wife picked Star Lane for my birthday today. The entire experience was magical. The estate is massive - over 7000 acres - and gorgeous. The views are spectacular and each wine sample was blowing our mind. Al and Eric gave us an extremely fun and education tour. “Kind of rude, frankly. I attempted to make an appointment and reached out directly due to waiting a bit late to make an appointment online and I fully understand not being able to accommodate so late. It's just me and I know they had had availability last I looked, but I figured worst case scenario it would be a polite no, see you next time and I'd carry on. Well, about 5hrs after initially reaching out I finally got a response and while it was a no, it was a no that additionally implied I hadn't read the website and they are PRIVATE hunty. RESERVATION ONLY. A full on capital NO. Yeah, that's why I messaged, thank you, let me clarify my request. You could've been more gracious about it. It's the lack of grace that made it feel rude, I suppose. I also have the feeling that had I not pointed out I'd be fitting them in at this point around other estate visits that it would've changed the tone. Instead it displayed to me that I won't waste my time or my money here or in their public stop. I travel the world and have been to wineries from Vinho Verde Portugal to Tuscany Italy, and I assure you, you guys are not that special. But thanks for eventually responding and I wish you guys the best with your super duper hoity toity private vineyard tours, may you be more gracious in turning prospective guests away in the future. It's not about what you say, its how you say it. Edited to add: Grassini at La Tarantella fit me in last minute and they were so gracious and welcoming and had such amazing wines. The other folks that came for their appointments later were lovely to socialize with. I have no regrets, and I highly recommend Grassini. They get it, you guys could learn a thing or two from them. Time well spent.”
