The first An family restaurant and home of their Secret Kitchen, Thanh Long opened in 1971 when grandmother Diana bought a 20 seat Mom and Pop diner in the quiet, oceanside Sunset area of San Francisco. In 1975, when the entire family arrived after fleeing the Communist take-over of South Vietnam, Diana’s quaint establishment became the beginning of the now multi-million dollar restaurant empire. At its opening it was hailed as San Francisco’s first Vietnamese restaurant and the crowds that include fans Harrison Ford and Danny Glover, regulars since before achieving their star status, have been packing Thanh Long ever since, enjoying its signature dishes, Roasted Crab and Garlic Noodles with Tiger Prawns, also featured at the other An Family restaurants. Thanh Long, a humble establishment 42 years ago, with an expansion that included moving into the neighboring video and barber shop, now delights 100’s of customers nightly.
“I used to eat at their An the Go trucks back in college and suddenly had craving for their noodles and beef. Thought id finally make the trip to their restaurant. Althought pricing May be on the expensive side, the service and taste is spectacular. Food is serve just a few minutes after ordering and their wait staff is very attentive. Just watch for the receipt as service charge is already included.”
“A San Francisco Legend: The Ultimate Roast Crab & Garlic Noodle Experience 🦀✨ If you are looking for an iconic dining experience in the Outer Sunset, Thanh Long remains the gold standard. This isn't just a meal; it’s a culinary pilgrimage for anyone who appreciates the perfect fusion of Vietnamese flavors and fresh California seafood. The Highlights: The World-Famous Roast Crab: The Dungeness crab is the undisputed star. It arrived perfectly cooked—meaty, sweet, and drenched in that legendary secret garlic sauce. The rich, savory aroma hits you the moment it reaches the table. Signature Garlic Noodles: You cannot visit Thanh Long without ordering these. The noodles are chewy, buttery, and packed with deep garlic umami. They are the perfect companion to the crab, soaking up every bit of the flavorful juices. Shaking Beef (Bo Luc Lac): The beef was incredibly tender, seared to perfection with just the right amount of char, and served over a crisp, refreshing salad. Appetizers: The Mussels served on toasted baguette slices were a highlight—the broth was fragrant and vibrant. The Fried Calamari was also impressive: light, crispy, and seasoned beautifully without being greasy. Atmosphere & Service: The ambiance is warm and upscale yet remains inviting and unpretentious. Despite the restaurant being busy, the service was attentive and professional. The staff knows the menu inside out and ensures the pacing of the meal is spot on. Verdict: Thanh Long continues to prove why it has been a San Francisco staple for decades. While it is a premium dining experience, the quality of the ingredients and the consistency of the flavors make it worth every penny. Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5) Pro Tip: This place is popular for a reason—be sure to make a reservation in advance, especially on weekends!”
“I’d been waiting to check out Thanh long for years and it didn’t disappoint. The Roast and garlic noodles were amazing!! The crab was very fresh and perfect for two people. It came out to $100 per person but both my friend and I walked out stuffed. I don’t say this a lot but it’s definitely worth the wait.”
“Great as always. Went on a Saturday night.. Party of 3 + a newborn. Called around 6, and they weren't taking walk-ins anymore... Went on open table and booked a reservation for 8:30 lol Got there early, which wasn't a problem. Drank 2 beers at the bar while we waited. We actually ended up getting sat about 30 ahead of schedule 🤞🏽 Got seated upstairs, which was a first for us. For some reason the vibe is a lot more laid back up there I feel? Could just be me, not sure, but it was more my vibe for sure. We ended up getting a couple items that the entire table shared. Shaken beef, wok egg noodles + shrimp, bowl of white rice, as well as the roasted crab. Everything on point, everything delish. Ended uo spending around $230 I want to say, with tip included.”
“A 10 year Anniversay Celebration here was absolutely 10/10. I highly recommend the crab and garlic noodles, and if you still want more in the photos are some other great choices. I couldn't get enough of my waitress smile everytime she checked on us. I love coming back to my city where I was born and raised for good food. Dessert was chefs kiss... fried banana and ice cream. Yum yum good!”
