Cayo Coco is a Spanish Latin Caribbean restaurant in the Central City neighborhood of Birmingham.
“I visited with a group of friends, and since it was all of our first time, we ordered a variety of entrées and appetizers so we could sample as much of the menu as possible. My favorite items were the Collard Green Cornbread, Smoked Fish Fritters, and the Brussels Sprouts — each dish was flavorful and well executed. The restaurant is just as beautiful in person as it appears in the photos. The service was excellent, and the drinks were thoughtfully crafted and well balanced. That said, there was one dish that I feel needs some improvement: the Oxtail Fried Rice. Based on previous photos posted on their website, it appeared that the oxtail was served over a bed of fried rice. However, when my dish arrived, it was a dome of fried rice with only small flakes of what I assume was oxtail mixed in. There was so little meat that it was difficult to tell. While the flavor itself was good, at a $29 price point, I would suggest either returning to the original presentation — serving the oxtail over the rice so guests can clearly see the portion of meat — or adjusting the price to better reflect what is essentially oxtail-flavored fried rice with very little actual oxtail. Anyone looking for a true “oxtail fix” may find this dish disappointing. Overall, that was the only letdown on an otherwise excellent menu. I’m still giving this place a 9 out of 10 and will definitely be back.”
“Attentive wait staff, cozy modern atmosphere, well made drinks (a bit on the strong side which we appreciate) the food was flavorful and unique. We really enjoyed our time! Drinks: Mai Tai and Guri Guri Appetizers: Tostones Entrees: Oxtail Fried Rice and Blackened Snapper Dessert: Coffee and vanilla ice cream”
“The hospitable staff at Cayo Coco make the experience so enjoyable. So much so that the Rum Bar has become our go-to spot to imbibe and transport to the Caribbean. Huge fan and enjoy every visit. 5 ⭐”
“We went to eat here during restaurant week, and ordered some things off their normal menu and also their limited restaurant week menu. The watermelon ceviche was amazing and was served with plantain chips which was super unique. I had the red snapper which is on their regular menu and was 10/10. We had a few different cocktails and loved them. The cocktails were very unique which was a nice change of pace. The atmosphere was relaxing; there’s an outdoor patio and front bar area for more casual and then a back room with a more upscale vibe. You can go casual or more upscale which I love. The owner was there also, and was super nice. I appreciate when management comes around to see how the experience is. Highly recommend!”
“The people are so nice and helpful, the atmosphere if really cool. The food presentation is great. But the food quality and taste were just so so. Maybe just a bad day. We will go back for another try.”
