Opened in 2018 in Katy Asian Town by 2022 James Beard Awards Semifinalist Alex Au-Yeung, Phat Eatery has earned an enthusiastic following for its freshly prepared Malaysian street food, relaxed atmosphere and warm hospitality. Influenced by Au-Yeung's upbringing in Hong Kong, his Malaysian heritage and both culture’s rich histories of borrowing from other culinary traditions, Phat Eatery offers interpretations of regional Southeast Asian specialties. The menu includes Chef’s award-winning beef rendang, curry laksa, nasi lemak, sizzling egg tofu and flaky roti canai in addition to stir-fried noodles, rice and vegetable dishes, house dim sum and seasonal specials. Early success and critical acclaim, including as one of Houston Chronicle’s Top 100 Restaurants, led to a restaurant expansion to accommodate twice as many guests. In 2022, Au-Yeung was nominated as a James Beard Awards Semifinalist for Best Chef: Texas and for “Chef of the Year” in CultureMap’s Tastemaker Awards. The restaurant is also in the running for CultureMap’s “Restaurant of the Year,” was named by Eater among “The 38 Essential Houston Restaurants,” and was highlighted by The New York Times as one of “America’s Next Great Restaurants” in the suburbs. phateatery.com
“Dear Hungry Reader, tell me true: do you love yourself? Do you believe you deserve culinary wonders and delights? If you really and truly love yourself and believe that you deserve good - nay, great! - things, then you need to check out Phat Eatery. My wife and I came on the recommendation of a friend and were enraptured by the experience. The vibe inside is immaculate: tasteful and thematically appropriate neon signage decorated a clean, dark industrial scape that is comfortable. The wait staff is also fantastic, especially Irene, who deftly walked us through flavor profiles and spice levels. But lost crucially, of course, was the food. We started with the steamed pork buns, which were out of this world yummy - the buns were soft and light and luscious, the filling savory goodness. My wife tried the Malaysian Chicken Curry, which was spectacular; I ordered the Sizzling Black Pepper Beef (2nd spice level, Serrano), which is presented very similar to fajitas. We shared the most buttery roti I've ever consumed. It suffices to say that we had a wonderful dining experience from top to bottom, and when we return to Katy in the future, we will be exploring more of the magnificent menu (and asking for Irene).”
“Absolutely delicious. We ordered the Nasi lemak and roti Canai and mango shrimp. The presentation of the Nasi lemak was different than what I'm used to in Malaysia, but it was a nice change and probably the best presentation of Nasi lemak i have seen.”
“Award winning restaurant for a good reasons. Service and atmosphere: Outstanding service from get go. Our server was polite, friendly and very knowledgeable about food on a menu. She helped us decide on our dishes selection by recommendations. The restaurant was clean, structured, very modern and comfortable. Open bar area in the middle is very nice. Food and drinks: Delicious and well thought through dishes. Traditional selections with fragrant ingredients and seasonings. All of that gave the food authenticity test. The portions were generous. Big selection of various beverages to choose from. Pricing: $$ - super worth it and we will be coming back to dine in here again.”
“The food here was truly exceptional, a delightful fusion of Asian cuisines. From Chinese-style dim-sum to Malaysian-inspired fried rice and Indian curry, each dish was bursting with flavor and savory goodness. A quick note: the dishes were slightly salty, but that was perfectly balanced by the special fish or shrimp sauce. The service was impeccable, with well-trained and incredibly friendly staff. The store itself was well-decorated with an industrial style, and it was spotlessly clean. I highly recommend trying the Malaysian fried rice and the basil beef (with a reduced amount of salt).”
“Overall is above the average. They have very good dishes but need to improve the quality of some ingredients. We went couple of times with a local chef. Because had upset stomach, it is thought that could be the type of cooking oil that they use but not sure. Any way they should check and know what ingredients are not very healthy. Doing some improvements in the ingredients that they use, it would become a well recommended place for other colleagues”
