Tom Sietsema says, "The dude who makes arguably the best ramen in town, at Toki Underground, turns out to be pretty deft with Taiwanese and Cambodian dishes, too. Erik Bruner-Yang took seemingly forever to open his second restaurant on H Street NE, but our patience paid off. When Maketto began serving steamed buns with shredded pork and Khmer-style meat dip with crudite in April, the launch also unveiled...pedigreed pastries (Frenchie’s) and coffee (Vigilante) — lots to like under one cool roof. I’m usually here for dinner on the ground floor, somewhere in a dining room that starts with a bar and spills onto a patio followed by an open kitchen with slender counters. And if my job didn’t require me to eat the full menu, I could happily stick to just the fried, five-spice chicken, that warm dip enriched with coconut milk and curry, and a Wagyu bao platter that goes down like Asian roast beef sandwiches. Come with an open mind. Ground duck hearts, brined in nuoc cham and smoky from the grill, could become your new best friend."
“We met some of our friends at Meketto for lunch. Asian fusion vibe. Menu is has wide variety to chose from including dim sum. We tried Cambodian noodle soup- basically pho with different name. Decent. Meketto chicken. This was very nice. Extra crispy and but the chicken itself was not overcooked. Similar to Korean fried chicken. We got the platter. They offer fried chicken sandwich, but the Meketto chicken has “five spices” and the sandwich does not? Didn’t ask to clarify but sandwich may be a better option for one person.”
“We were sat super quickly outside with no wait around 5:30 pm on a Friday. Service was fast, and vibes were great inside and on the patio. We ordered the wok noodles, chicken sandwich, sourdough scallion pancake, and cucumber salad. The sandwich was definitely the standout — chicken was huge and covered in spices, which were a perfect fragrant touch. Wok noodles were also great, a little salty, but in a nice broth with flavorful mushrooms and Sichuan spices on top. Scallion pancake was super fluffy and chewy. Portions are definitely large enough to share. Fair prices and friendly staff”
“I come from Panama, where Asian cuisine is incredibly diverse and abundant, so it takes a lot to impress me. That said, Maketto absolutely did. I can confidently say their bao and fried chicken are some of the best I’ve ever tried. Everything was packed with flavor, perfectly prepared, and memorable from the very first bite. Definitely a place I’ll come back to and highly recommend.”
“Great place to try in DC! My sister, son and I tried this restaurant out and they hit the mark. We were also able to come during Restaurant week so we got to try so much food, for a great deal. The service was impeccable and everyone was SO friendly. They made it a point to help us get to our hockey game after so they timed the food well and were just overall so kind. Their bao platter had plenty, cucumber were refreshing, and the matcha tiramisu was delicious.”
“My boyfriend made a reservation here so I could celebrate my birthday with my girlfriends, and it was wonderful! This was my second time visiting, and once again they did not disappoint. The food was just as good as I remembered, the atmosphere was great, and the staff were all very friendly and welcoming. We ordered the Crystal Shrimp Dumplings so flavorful, especially with fish sauce and lime if you enjoy that combination. The Ginger Chicken Soup Dumplings were also very tasty, packed with rich soy sauce flavor. The Sourdough Scallion Pancake was excellent, and the Lo Mein was just as delightful. The shrimp dumplings were such a hit with my girlfriends that we had to order a second round! Overall, it was the perfect place to celebrate and share good food with friends. I’ll definitely be back again!”
