Kalaya, located in the heart of Fishtown at 4 W Palmer St, offers an authentic example of Southern Thai cuisine created by Chef Nok Suntaranon. The bold and bright flavors of the menu are thoughtfully prepared and delicately balanced according the recipes passed down from her mother, Kalaya, who is the restaurants namesake.
“As a Thai visitor from SF, I was impressed by how authentic the food tasted. I sat at the bar, and Carissa was incredibly friendly and provided excellent service throughout my visit. The food was outstanding, and every dish was full of authentic flavors. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for upscale Thai cuisine done right.”
“Everything that my family and I experienced at Kalaya was phenomenal. Service was quick and attentive. The Zero Proof Lychee Negroni was flavorful, with a light, sweet profile. The crab stir-fry was full of tasty crab and rich in flavor. The chef was present that day and came out to greet all her guests. What an incredible experience. 10 out of 10 would recommend.”
“Honestly, unbelievable! I was visiting Philly for the first time, and my friends brought me here. I’m a big fan of Thai food in general. This was not your average Thai food experience. Super authentic dishes and ingredients. Rice, seafood, herbs, and other things brought in from overseas. Some of the best curry I’ve ever had. The jumbo prawn dish might’ve been a top 10 Asian dish I’ve ever had. The wait staff in general may have been a little bit below where the rest of the restaurant was, but they still did good. I ended up doing the tasting menu. Come back here in a heartbeat.”
“Chose Kalaya to celebrate my birthday eve and it delivered on every single level. The food is bold, authentic, and bursting with flavor — and the vegetarian options are genuinely outstanding, not just an afterthought. The ambience is stunning. Warm, intimate, electric — the kind of place that makes you want to stay forever. The staff were attentive and kind, and the owner’s personal warmth and passion for what they do truly sets this place apart. This isn’t just a restaurant. It’s an experience. I absolutely cannot wait to come back”
“Had the most amazing birthday dinner last night. There were 4 people in our party. We all did the tasting. So much food. And so very good. We enjoyed the shaw muang, which was almost too pretty to eat; gui chai; gaeng gai khao mun; nam prik almond; gai yaang naa por; sua rang hai; nua toun; tiramisu; coconut shaved rice. All were undescribably delicious. our waiter was very helpful and gave great suggestions. The cabbage (kalem tod nam pla) was tasty. I really can't say enough. This was probably one of the best meals I have had. The drinks were amazing as well. The song shot I could have drank all day. The atmosphere is pleasant. You could see them working in the kitchen. We sat at a booth. It was crowded, but the noise level wasn't bad. Service was attentive, but not overpowering. *note on parking: leave time to park. We had to drive in and I found a spot fairly close, but street parking is very limited.”
