The infamy of the Prohibition Era was a not too distant memory when Arthur’s Tavern first opened its doors in 1937 and the vibe was of a NYC speakeasy that was commonplace in those times. We wanted to continue providing that same feel, which is why things haven’t changed all too much over the years in terms of our look & atmosphere. Customers came to our speakeasy to enjoy themselves throughout the later part of the Great Depression and World War II. It was decided in the early 1950s that live music would be added to the bar’s offerings and it was a move that not only paid off in the short term, but also helped Arthur’s Tavern become synonymous with New York City culture. Arthur’s Tavern is an internationally recognized speakeasy bar that has been operating for more than 85 years in a designated historic building in the heart of the West Village. We’re also known as the “Home of the Bird” since we are the last continuously operating NYC jazz club that regularly had the renowned Charlie Parker perform on stage. Besides Charlie Parker, we’ve played host to a plethora of legendary musicians over the years including Roy Hargrove, Sweet Georgia Brown, Mabel Godwin, the Chicagoans and the Grove Street Stompers. Our speakeasy bar hosts outstanding live jazz, blues and rhythm & blues music each and every night of the week. When you come to our bar, you will get the experience you would have a century ago at a vintage speakeasy from the Prohibition Era. Except the cocktails have been stepped up a notch so you can enjoy some craft drinks that you would see in other modern day bars. We decorate our space the way we do because we want you to feel at your home away from home with us. Come and enjoy the music we have, whether you come on the same night each week or want to see the true variety that we have to offer by dropping in on different days. Speaking of variety, that’s what you’ll get in our bar’s drink menu. There are so many different options to choose from that range from old favorites to unique alcoholic beverages that you can only find here at Arthur’s Tavern.
“I’ve been coming to Arthur’s Tavern for 18+ years, and it’s still one of my favorite spots in the city. The space has a modern feel (post Covid reno) while still keeping the classic charm that makes it so special. There’s a $15 minimum per person, but it’s absolutely worth it when you consider the quality of the live music. There are always fantastic bands playing and the atmosphere is unbeatable. The service is impressively friendly too, especially given how busy they tend to be most nights. It’s the kind of place that feels both timeless and refreshed, a true West Village gem I’ll keep coming back to.”
“Went for a cocktail and to listen to great music with my daughter on a recent visit. We didn’t have food, hence no review on that. Chris at the door was friendly and welcoming. Look forward to another visit on my next trip to New York.”
“If I am in NYC on a Monday night, I am at Arthur's to see the Grove Street Stompers. It is thought they are the longest running regular band in a venue in the history of the city, but that also means probably also the USA and potentially the World, having played here every Monday night since 1962 (with the exception of the funeral for JFK and Covid). The venue is sublime. The band is amazing. Dixieland can not die while such consumate musicians carry its legacy. Thank you again and again for allowing me to be a tiny part of this incredible history. See u again asap!!!”
“I stopped by for a drink and a snack. We ordered the cheese board - everything was incredibly dry. The cheese like it has been sitting out uncovered for days. Just super disappointing. The crackers tasted stale. And it came with no mustard, honey, nothing to take some of the dryness away. When we got our tab and handed a card over - bartender asked if we were told at the door it was cash only. We were not told and for context when we got here there were only two people inside so there should be no reason we weren’t told. We actually made eye contact with the woman at the door - she didn’t say a word to us. They do have an ATM there but I generally don’t carry my debit card so this was super frustrating. I ordered their ale and it was really good so that’s the only thing I was happy about. They had live music but it felt a bit loud for the space.”
“The door guy says it's $15 minimum once we seat down which is normal at a nyc bar - whoever is paying needs to meet the minimum. I went with a group of 3, we all got a $12 happy hour drinks and when we got the bill it was $56 DOLLARS. Mind you this is all on one check so we technically did meet the minimum. The waiter says the price is correct because it's actually $15 PER PERSON. How simple is it to just say PER PERSON before people sit down. But idk if I was over 35 working a door in the west village, I guess I would be lazy with my words as well 🤷🏾♀️”
