Martiny’s offers a superb cocktail experience in a historical carriage house in Gramercy. Co-founder and Beverage Director Takuma Watanabe, uses his cocktail expertise to curate a menu that focuses on classic cocktails with his own elevated spin. Takuma’s name in Japanese is “渡邉琢磨”. The last character of his name “磨” (“migaku”) means “to polish” in English, which is exactly what Takuma has been doing over the last 10+ years in his career. Always in the pursuit of “Shokunin”, a Japanese term used to describe an artisan who masters their profession, Takuma has polished his skills to embrace the “Shokunin spirit” and is excited to share his meticulously honed craft with the world via Martiny’s cocktails. The name Martiny’s is a play on the fact that you will definitely find delicious martinis on the menu, after all, they’re Takuma’s favorite cocktail. But, it also pays homage to Philip Martiny, a French-American sculptor, whose studio used to occupy the space. The design will respect the history of the original 1800s carriage house, allowing its fundamental structure to be honored. Modern Japanese elements will be worked in throughout the space to reflect Takuma’s influences from training in bars across Japan. The original wood and brickwork mixed with Japanese sensibility and refinement will offer a cozy and welcoming environment with enticing, tasteful cocktails to match.
“I loved the cocktails at this place—they’re incredibly well crafted and have an exquisite flavor. I’ve even started to think they might be the best in New York City. The atmosphere is very cozy and perfect for enjoying a great cocktail. It’s also really interesting to watch the bartenders as they prepare the drinks. The only thing I’d change is that I wish the place were bigger, since so many people want to visit. Spectacular!”
“Martiny’s says it all in the name… Best caviar martini I have ever had. They made me enjoy a dry martini, which I usually don’t. They also made me enjoy a “porcini risotto” cocktail, which was surprisingly tasty. The staff is efficient, professional and accommodating. I had an amazing time, good vibes & great bar snacks. The à la carte cocktail menu is very well elaborated and it deserves its hype. Thank you!”
“Honestly this place deserves a flat 4.85- PS round up. The bartenders and staff here are stellar, and literally are Michellin level. Period. Full stop. I've been to other top 50 cars in the world and this one is absolutely above the rest. The consistency of the drinks, the quality of the people here asking with the bartenders bring the level to a top 15 bar. The bartenders are so amazing. They are really awesome along with the staff making sure you are always doing amazing without hovering or disappearing like ice experienced in other places. I've been here a few times and the bartenders are literally gods. The presentation and meticulous balance of every drink comes out clean and the flavor profile is executed flawlessly. I can't recommend this place enough. The one knock I have on this place is the food portions. The flavor of the food and it being delicious to all ends is why I order, but the portions again make me regret it after I get a bite. Thank you Philip and Ethan. Update: Still amazing, and wonder how it’s not in the top 20 bars in the world. I’ve been to enough top bars around the world to have a good perspective on really great drinks and amazing drinks. This bar has amazing drinks for every palette with a really well balanced pop.”
“Martiny’s is what Sip and Guzzle wishes it was. The atmosphere is intimate and lovely; the staff are very attentive and thoughtful; and the martinis are creative and taste so good. My husband and I came here for drinks after work. Our reservation was only for two hours, and we enjoyed a few speciality martinis and some of their bar snacks. The drinks are good, strong, and very well-made. There’s no pretense here or stuffiness; just well-crafted drinks and great food and service.”
“First impression was NOT great. We were greeted with rules... 1hr 45 minutes to vacate the premises, and a $50 minimum spend. Less than hospitable to say the least. We ordered the first round of cocktails and several "appetizers". The foods were decent, but not memorable, and the first round were 50/50. We ended up ordering tried and true cocktails for the second round, and again 50/50. One of them used an "artisanal" ingredient which removed it from the classical category, so it wasn't what we were expecting and wanting. Anyway, 1 hr into our alloted 1 hr 45 minute time frame, we were asked if we wanted anything else so they could "make space for the next reservation". First of all, we still have time left, which in and of itself is a ridiculous premise, second of all, we're still working on our second round and discussing a possible third. We decided that we didnt feel welcomed and chose to go to another location to continue the evening. What's happening to hospitality in the restaurant/bar industry??? More money, less service.....churn and burn. We will not be repeat patrons.”
