Cowan's Public is an American restaurant in the Nutley neighborhood of Nutley.
“Food was excellent and service was attentive and helpful. She was very friendly and knowledgeable about the food on the menu. Both drinks we ordered were delicious but unfortunately at the moment I can't remember their names. We had the Mac and Cheese, chopped steak egg rolls and the summer salad to start, and had the Fried Chicken sandwich and Crab Pasta for entrees. Everything came out wonderful and will definitely return”
“Cowans always has great food and drink offerings! I love going there for brunch but their dinners are pretty great too! Everything is fresh and delicious. The staff is friendly. They sometimes have fun events like bingo or trivia! The staff is very friendly and the restaurant is clean. Their special Christmas takeover, Miracle on Centre, is always a fun time!”
“Excellent customer service, and delicious food! I ordered the Short ribs, it was very tasty and tender! This is the BEST Espresso martini I’ve had! It’s made to perfection! Love the vibe here, highly recommend!”
“My fiancé and I visited Cowan’s Public for the first time and left feeling a bit underwhelmed overall. To start on a positive note, the cocktails were excellent. We each ordered a different signature drink, and both were beautifully crafted and flavorful, no complaints there at all. The appetizers were also solid and came out at a reasonable pace. Despite the restaurant looking packed when we arrived, the service was very good. Our server was attentive, friendly, and made us feel well taken care of throughout the evening. Unfortunately, the main courses were where things fell short. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich, and my portion was noticeably burnt on one side. My fiancé ordered the Caesar salad, which looked more like a small side salad than a full entrée. That was disappointing, especially after such a strong start to the meal. We ended the night with espresso martinis, which were decent but didn’t quite match the quality of the first round of cocktails. Overall, the evening started strong but ended with a feeling of “that was alright.” We’d be open to giving it another try, perhaps during happy hour, since the drinks and service were definite highlights.”
“Ambiance is lovely and out waitress was sweet, however those are the most positive things I can say. Our entree orders were simple - salads with protein. Caesar salad was crazy fishy (and I love anchovies) and SO heavily dressed; it was challenging to eat. I applaud they’re using jumbo shrimp, but they were mushy. The farro salad had a very unappealing dressing that tasted like old oil (sent it back and the manager came out to defend it. I didn’t even ask for it to be taken off the hill, but don’t feel like arguing that it’s indeed off). The warm burrata app was so unappealingly sweet, and for the love of God, don’t heat the burrata!! Heat what it’s served with, but the integrity of the burrata is ruined when heated. The martinis are more like tiny tinis in the teensiest little glass and not chilled sufficiently. It’s a half pour at $14. Puhleeeease use a coupe at least! $200 for three people, two drinks each, two apps and salads. I wanted to love this place but they fell short in so many ways. Super sweet for a glass of wine just for the ambiance, but eat elsewhere.”
