Shady Rest Restaurant is an American restaurant in the Bayville neighborhood of Bayville.
“We had a great experience overall! The tomato pie came out hot and fresh, the buffalo wings were definitely on the spicy side but still really delicious (just wish I had some ranch on the side!). The nacho supreme was so good — I’d absolutely order it again, just without the jalapeños next time. Service was solid with refills coming regularly, but we did have to wait a bit for our food. Toward the end, it felt like we were being rushed out, which wasn’t ideal since we were enjoying great conversation with a couple next to us. Prices were affordable, the location is convenient, and parking was good. Overall, it’s a fun spot in South Jersey for good laughs, drinks, and company. We’d definitely go back! 🍕❤️”
“If you’re heading down the Shore and craving something simple, satisfying, and reliably good, Shady Rest Restaurant continues to be a go-to for locals who appreciate classic comfort food done right. This is the kind of place that doesn’t need a lot of fanfare. The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious, with that familiar neighborhood feel that makes you instantly comfortable. It’s not about trends here—it’s about consistency, and Shady Rest delivers on that time and time again. On my visit, I opted to take something to go, which is always a great test of a kitchen—because if it holds up outside the restaurant, you know it’s worth it. I tried the sweet potato bisque and the Manhattan clam chowder, and both were excellent in their own way. The sweet potato bisque was smooth, rich, and full of flavor. It had that perfect balance of natural sweetness and savory depth, without being overly heavy. It’s the kind of soup that feels both comforting and a little indulgent at the same time—especially on a cooler day. The Manhattan clam chowder, on the other hand, offered a completely different profile. Light, tomato-based, and packed with clams and vegetables, it was fresh-tasting and well-seasoned. It didn’t feel overly salty or thick, which can sometimes be the case—it was clean, satisfying, and exactly what you’d hope for from a classic version of this dish. The fact that both soups traveled well and still tasted this good says a lot. Even outside the restaurant setting, the quality held up, which isn’t always easy to do. Beyond the food, Shady Rest has a reputation for being a welcoming, easygoing spot—somewhere you can dine in, grab a drink at the bar, or simply pick up something to enjoy at home. The outdoor space in warmer months adds to its charm, giving it that true Jersey Shore feel. Service is friendly and efficient, whether you’re dining in or picking up. It’s clear this is a place that values its regulars—and keeps them coming back. In a world of overcomplicated menus and trendy concepts, there’s something refreshing about a place like Shady Rest. It knows exactly what it is: a dependable local restaurant serving comforting, well-prepared food. And sometimes, that’s exactly what you’re in the mood for.”
“The food is out of this world. Smaller place with a bar in the front (also one outside) and indoor/outdoor seating for food. The rose garden is gorgeous when in season. Lunch specials are a great price when you want a quick lunch and the regular meal/dinner portion are huge! Worth every cent. Every time I visit, I’m so happy I did. I included pictures of a few meals and times I’ve gone. The staff is always very friendly too!! Very thankful to be introduced to this place and it’ll be a mainstay for me for a very long time.”
“I've driven past the Shady Rest Restaurant several times, and made plans to eat there last Tuesday. I'm very happy that I did. They're located at 796 Atlantic Avenue in Bayville, and they're a comfy bar/restaurant, serving steaks, ribs, chicken, Italian dishes, pizzas/bar pies, and sandwiches. On Tuesday nights, they offer a special for $5 off a chicken parmigiana entree, and that's what I went for. All entrees come with your choice of regular Italian bread or garlic bread (two of us opted for garlic bread, and we were given a whole loaf), in addition to a house salad or cup of soup. The chicken parm gets your choice of baked potato, French fries, or pasta. In addition to their housemade red sauce, you can swap out for a sauce upgrade to fra diavlo, vodka, marinara, or Bolognese for an upcharge. Three large pieces of chicken cover the generous portion of spaghetti. The chicken is tasty, seasoned with a nice breading, and the red sauce is well-balanced, not too sweet or too savory. This is definitely a "plan to bring home half of this" entree. Not shown, but I chose the soup as part of the meal, and their Manhattan clam chowder is fantastic. Clams in every spoonful, huge chunks of fresh vegetables, and a nice hint of briny flavor made it one of the better Manhattan clam chowders I've had. Appetizer was an order of Krabby Bread to be shared. (Some other places might call it 'Crab meltaways', or something similar.) It's 'krab' dip spread over half a loaf of Italian bread, and broiled, and it was fantastic. (They're calling it 'krab', and I'm the one putting it in quotes, so I assume it might be imitation crab, because they have other menu items that include crab spelled with a 'c', but either way, the Krabby Bread is still delicious.) Our server was very attentive, and everything was timed perfectly. I look forward to visiting again soon.”
“Honestly I was never impressed with Shady Rest. Went for lunch with my friend (her suggestion) hoping it would be better. Not many people in the restaurant...it was around 2:00 so lunch rush would be over. This was during the work week. Our waitress wasn't friendly at all which turned me off. She sat us in the main room which was good. After getting our drinks we ordered our lunch. It was 2 sandwiches. We waited very close to an hour for our food. I was ready to walk out but stayed because my friend was quite hungry. Our waitress never came over to us regarding our meals. I had to call her over to find out what was happening. After another 20 minutes or so lunch finally arrived. The sandwiches were fine.”
