“We chose Rice & Sambal for my birthday dinner and it could not have been any better! We went on a Friday night for the 5 course prix fixe menu- I got the vegan option, my partner got the non-vegan option and neither one of us was disappointed! Each course was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G- we were both blown away by the unique flavors, textures and creativity put into each dish. Everything was cooked to perfection. The atmosphere was beautiful and calm and service was outstanding. We didn't feel rushed and could actually enjoy being out to dinner. It is near impossible for my partner and I to agree on a restaurant, let alone one that we both love, but Rice and Sambal fit the bill. It was our best meal out in a very long time and we already have plans to go back for our anniversary. Do not sleep on getting a reservation here- you will not be disappointed!”
“This was our first time at a super club and we would definitely go again. It was a small, intimate setting with a nice vibe. The menu was very shrimp/shellfish forward. My husband doesn’t tend to like those types of foods - he’s more red meat and dislikes most seafood) but he loved everything on the menu. Each dish was well-balanced and well-proportioned. When we spend $200 on a meal, we sometimes still leave hungry but we left rice n Sambal full and satisfied. I’d love to go back once they change the menus again”
“Food was absolutely phenomenal, one of the best meals I can remember. We did the a Vegan Liwetan and it blew my mind. The owners were extremely kind as well and this is definetly a must visit. Can’t wait to go back!”
“Excellent. I hate describing food as “authentic”, but Rice & Sambal is one of the very few places that serve well-made authentic versions of traditional Indonesian dishes. Everything tasted “correct”. The eggplant balado had the deep flavors achieved only by slowly cooking down the sambal. It was one of the tastiest I’ve had, which says a lot as eggplant balado’s one of my favorite dishes. The other sambals served as dipping sauces on the side were balanced (lots of bright lemongrass in the green sambal, reminds me of Balinese sambals). They went well with the chayote and fried foods. Tofu and tempe no longer masquerade as health food. They’ve been properly presented as the batter-fried junk food often sold as snacks by street vendors, who will also sell the vegetable fritters on this platter. The fritters here were delightful, lightly crisp with a soft almost-fluffy-yet-gooey batter. Braises and stews were really tasty. The tempe bacem tasted really proper, like you can find them in everyday eateries but made a bit more intense. The jackfruit stew tasted like a less-sweet version of gudeg. If Padang’s rendang is the king of Indonesian food, then Yogyakarta’s gudeg is the king of vegan Indonesian food. And the platter wouldn’t be complete with charcoal-grilled food, one of the most traditional ways of cooking. Indonesian street corn is made using margarine and chili sauce, similar to elote without the cheese. The vegan platter has grilled maitake, while the non-vegan version should have the more common chicken or fish. Overall, much recommended. It is a bit pricy but it’s a premium I’ll gladly pay for the quality. I’ve only found one other Indonesian spot (in NYC) where the food tastes so “correct”. Come here with an empty stomach, and expect to bring home boxes of leftovers. BYOB.”
“Wanted more seasoning and flavoring to shine through and didn’t quite get that. The Bone Marrow dish was the most flavorful. Very kind and intimate restaurant. Someone opted to leave as they didn’t specify vegetarian when booking the reservation causing issues, so make sure to specify that.”
