“We have been driving by this bakery trying to remember to try it for a while. We finally stopped in last weekend. We both had croissants - one savory, and one sweet. I personally had the sweet - chocolate almond - and it was AMAZING! I love almond filling, and most places put a tiny dab... not here! It was generously filled and just wonderful. The croissant itself was so good. Flaky and buttery, I definitely wore some crumbs home. The savory croissant was also very good (per the eater :) ). We will definitely be stopping in here more regularly. Be aware there is no seating inside, but there is a bench out in front. The main village rose garden is basically across the street from it, so would be a very nice place to enjoy your food. Highly recommend!”
“Best bakery in town and beyond. This is what all bakeries should aspire to be. Excellent bread, fun and delicious pastries, great coffee. The staff is very friendly and I enjoy my time there whenever I stop in. Don't sleep on their seasonal offerings, I love ordering ahead to make the holidays extra special. The Heritage Baking book is my bible!”
“Hewn is the absolute gold standard for anyone seeking honest, delicious food. Having shopped and eaten here countless times, I can confidently recommend it to anyone who values quality over convenience. In a world full of "mal bouffe," Hewn is the perfect solution. Their dedication to hyper-local sourcing and heritage grains creates a depth of flavor you just can't find elsewhere. I love that they prioritize health by using less sugar, yet they never compromise on the generosity of their portions or the richness of their bakes. It is the kind of rare find that works perfectly for a special holiday spread, but is also hearty and reliable enough for every single day. If you want food made with integrity that actually tastes incredible, this is the place.”
“We are excited to have this bakery in the neighborhood. We have not visited their Evanston location yet, but this is the next best thing. The staff are so nice and helpful are able to answer all questions on their bakery items. We’ve made it a Saturday tradition to pick up pastries a loaf of bread for the week. The quality of their pastries is 10/10 and you can tell it was made with high quality ingredients. Worth a visit! Or two!”
“The croissant doesn't have good lamination, which makes the texture just average. The first thing you taste is saltiness, not the aroma of butter. The coffee technique also needs improvement — the milk used doesn't match the espresso shot, resulting in a bland, watery taste.”
