China Chilcano celebrates the rich culinary diversity of Peru and brings an exciting exploration of this multicultural cuisine to our Nation's Capital. The restaurant honors Peru's deeply rooted and diverse heritage, including its native Criollo, Chinese Chifa and Japanese Nikkei cuisines; its name an homage to Peru's renowned fish stew and its popular national drink, the Chilcano. China Chilcano ranks consistently as a top DC dining destination, and was awarded a bib gourmand in the 2017-2020 Michelin guides to Washington, DC.
“Peruvian + Chinese + Japanese = Delicious! China Chilcano has exceptional, creative cuisine that is unforgettable. My boyfriend and I both got the brunch tasting menu along with a couple cocktails. The yuca fries were outstanding, between the sauce and bonito flakes, I really enjoyed the flavors and the crispiness of the yuca with that one. The ceviche was also great, I like the incorporation of the chili oil in that and it really evolves it from a typical Peruvian ceviche. The patacones had great flavors, but the tostones and the chicharron were a little hard to cut. Likewise, I wish I could've gotten a bit more chicharron in that meal, but still delicious overall. We also got the Tacu Tacu a lo pobre, which I really enjoyed. By the time dessert came we were stuffed, but still enjoyed their suspiro limena. The cocktails I'd recommend are the pisco sour and their mimosa morada.”
“4.5/5 for food. This will always be one of my top spots in DC! The blend of Peruvian cuisine using Japanese and Chinese methods and elements is something you would not expect, but turns out to be incredible. Star dishes are the ceviche nikkei, lomo saltado, and tallarín saltado de verduras. All of their pisco sours are incredible as well. We also had the suspiro limeña for dessert and I loved it. Very fresh, sour and not too sweet. Feels more like a fresh fruit than a dessert. Prices may seem a little on the higher side, but the quality of the food you are getting is top notch. 100% worth it. I’ve been there twice and definitely would come even more!”
“I had no idea there was another José Andres spot in a two block radius - and it was worth the visit! Our server was attentive and made a great recommendation on the cauliflower when we decided to get another dish. We especially loved the ceviche Nikkei - great flavor and texture. The Hong Kong rich noodle dish was so so compared to the rest. And the dessert - yum! Tasted like caramel with passion fruit ice on top. The decor / ambiance is both modern and also low key - they have metal chairs, and funky lights. It doesn’t have the higher end feel — if that’s what you want, try Zaytinya.”
“We're fans of Chef José Andrés whole make the world a better place vibe and have made it our mission to try all of his DC restaurants whenever we're in town. This time up it was China Chilcano...Pervian/Asian/Spanish fusion food with lots of vegetarian options and unique things to try. We (my wife, son and I) all got variations of the tasting menu and each made different choices from the options available...and we each had different experiences. I had a bit of a "the grass is greener" experience as I tried bits of what my son had ordered and generally preferred what he got in terms of taste and texture. Universally, the food was gorgeous and presented in a photo-ready manner one would expect from this kind of establishment. The desserts were also unique and worth trying. (Often desserts at a nicer place can be standard variations of the same thing you can get anywhere...what's on the menu here is worth sticking around for as you can't get it anywhere else. I also had a Pisco Sour Cocktail...I'm a fan of trying the things that are unique to where I am...in this case, the cocktail looked and tasted great, but it had more of a standard sour vibe than anything else. If the Peruvian pisco liquor had any unique taste, I wasn't able to perceive it in this cocktail. Service was perfect.”
“Fifty minutes for an entree at lunch. We came in for lunch at 1:15pm really excited for the lunch special and a new cuisine. All the tables seated around us go their food before us. One didn’t even arrive until after we ordered and they were finished before our food arrived. The service was incredibly terrible. The manager came out 2 times to apologize but just said “we know it doesn’t change anything but sorry we were busy” not a great way to treat a customer. A free drink, dessert, discount, or coupon for a future meal would have gone a long way. The food was INCREDIBLE tender, flavorful, a wowed my tastebuds, but unfortunately I was really turned off by the waitress that must have forgotten to put in our order. I’m going to assume this is not the normal experience because like I said, all the other tables got their food. However this was our experience so while I give the food 5 stars, the service was so terrible at our table that I can only give it one star.”
