“We’ve been here a number of times and every dish was absolutely fantastic and created with care. The servers are also friendly and attentive. We even came during graduation when they had several large parties, but somehow still managed to exceed our expectations. This restaurant is so good it would do well in NYC or LA. But for now it’s going to have to just get by as the best restaurant in South West Virginia. Ouano, save Room for dessert. They’re white chocolate, dessert and ice creams are out of this world. They need to start selling the ice cream for togo !”
“Wife and I tried the River and Rail for the first time. We were first in after opening at 5PM. You'll need to make a reservation (expect to put a $20 per person commitment on the reservation - they charge No Shows). Place was packed solid within 20 minutes. We absolutely loved everything (ok, not a fan for the Braised Collar Greens - just not a fan of Kimchi but it was authentic - don't try if you're not a fan of Very Spicy). In all seriousness, everything was perfect. We started with an order of Jar of Pickles. An array of vegis pickled in an array of spices. Loved some combos better than others, but enjoyed them all. Wife ordered the Roasted Beet Salad and absolutely loved the Saffron Yogurt dressing. Said she'd lick the bowl (but didn't due to social norms). She said it was to Die For... I had the Farmers Green Salad. All was exceptionally fresh and the dressing was delicious. I tried the Smoke in Chimney Trout - amazing. At first, I wasn't sure if I was supposed to eat the skin... it was amazing. Trout was cooked to perfection. I sub'd the Collar Greens of the Barley (watching carbs). I don't recommend that swap. Wife tried Carolina White Shrimp with grits. The shrimp were Fresh and Luscious. The grits were Yummy (her words). Perfect consistency - smooth and not runny. Great texture. As mentioned above, neither of us liked the Collar Greens Kimchi, but that's personnel preference. A Kimchi connoisseur would probably love it. We ended the evening splitting a three flavor ice cream sampler (Beet, Orange, Whiskey flavored). You could tell it was freshly made in house. Wife liked the Beet, I liked the Whiskey, we both loved the Orange. In all, maybe a half cup of ice cream. Perfect size for us to split. WE WILL BE GOING BACK!!!”
“We have been coming here a long time, and it is always amazing!! Everything on the menu is fantastic, we have tried most everything. The service is always perfect. The staff are very prompt, professional, and welcoming. We love coming here for an upscale dining experience like no other. 💓 The food pictured is the butchers board, raw oysters, chicken liver mousse, shrimp and grits, mussels, and hanger steak.”
“We had an incredible first visit to River & Rail! The service and food were both outstanding, and the entire experience felt special from start to finish. My husband and I decided to splurge on several appetizers and small plates, and every bite was worth it. Favorites included the spicy pork rinds, beet salad, fried oysters, and especially the oysters on the half shell with the mignonette chow chow — absolute heaven and my personal highlight. The drinks were just as impressive and perfectly complemented the meal. Overall, a fantastic dining experience. We’ll definitely be back and highly recommend!”
“This place was fantastic! My wife and I got the cornbread, the ribs, the hangar steak, and the halibut. Every menu item was delicious - and unique. Our waitress, Alexia, was knowledgeable, welcoming, and attentive as well. We will be coming back!”
