José and his team decided to bring this exciting restaurant to Bethesda, where José and his family reside. The menu at Spanish Diner is quintessentially Spanish, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find these dishes at any restaurant in Spain as these are the recipes that are found at home, shared around the kitchen table with family and friends, generation after generation. This location will feature dishes from Asturias, where José was born, in addition to hearty stews, classic tapas, fresh salads and vegetables, and the delectable Madrid specialty, Huevos Rotos Casa Lucio, fried eggs with crispy potatoes and choice of Spanish meat.
“If you want to try real homemade Spanish food, the same one that you grandma would cook for you, this is the place. It is offered a large variety of Spanish typical plates. Not fancy at all, simple plates, just real, tasty and incredible plates that you would it in your regular life in Spain. Cocido croquettes are delicious. The bechamel is greatly achieved. Huevos rotos de Casa Lucio with jamón is always a good choice and you can order them depending on your party size. The Ensaladilla is also very fresh, with the potatoes baked perfectly and the mayonnaise well cooked. Staff here are really attentive. I’ve come multiple times and I’ve been always served by Lorena, who is adorable and offers her best service to make you enjoy the meal. Price here is average compares to Washington, with some plates more expensive due to the nature of the ingredients. Other than that, it is very affordable. I recommend ordering 3-4 plates to share for a party of 2.”
“I just came home from here. It's New Years Eve. They had a 5 course menu planned for the night. My goal was to try everything. So I ordered for 2. I'm not a drinker of alcoholic beverages, so I got the bottle cola and Sprite instead. I got the tomato bread and salad first. Both were delicious! Next up I got a shrimp and crab meat salad and fried potatoes. Potatoes were a bit spicy, but the taste of both plates were great! Then came the shrimp bowl and calamari. I had to ask for lemon to put over the calamari because it was a bit bland, but after I got lemon slices, both plates were flavorful and delicious. The main course meals after eating a bunch of delicious food, were a bit disappointing. I got the lamb which was severely underdone. They took it back, but instead of a fresh plate my current pieces were simply pan seared again which made the outside hard, but the inside still undercooked. The other main course I ordered were the meatballs. Definitely great in taste, but very "different" in texture. These meals could've been better hence the 4 stars for food. For dessert I got the flan and fruit salad and both tasted fabulous. The service was amazing in spite of the main course issues. I tip very well for good service and that is exactly what our waitress received. I'll definitely be back!”
“We had lunch and enjoyed most of the dishes. Ordered three from grandma special and one from all day breakfast. The food is tasty and nice. Beef strip stew was a pleasant surprise. Interiors were nice and clean. Waitress was attentive.”
“Very interesting flavors. This restaurant is worth a visit. If I had time, I would have tried the jambalaya, which takes 45 minutes to prepare. It looks like it would be delicious. Con: We had a party of 10 and they split us up. The restaurant was not crowded and we were seated far away from each other. This was a business lunch, where remote workers were meeting their co-workers in person for the first time. That was a smite bumming.”
“The Spanish diner delivers a lot of small dishes, tapas, and good variety. The gazpacho was excellent. The lentils were good, but they were missing a lot of the vegetables described therein -the fish was delicious. I had some sangria, which was not bad at all. I recommend for an evening visit with their nice patio and it's a good addition I think to the overall odd mix in Bethesda.”
