Brew remarkable beer. Be independent. Give a damn.
“Good food, great drinks, and killer vibe. Nick was our server and not only was super friendly but took time to go through the menu with our large group and recommended some great food and drink choices. (and he was still nice to us after I fumbled a handshake with him and knocked his tray out of his hands- thank you. 🙃) All the staff were kind and attentive from the main bar, to the check in booth, and everywhere else in between. Only one from our group is local to the area but if someone mentions they are coming anywhere near the area this would be a top recommendation from me.”
“Even in the cold of Winter in the Twin Cities, the draw of Surly beckons. This is a excellent space. The lighting, overall decor, large tables, long bar, and a very wide variety of beers on tap - something for everyone. And the pizzas are excellent, as well. If you are a fan of dark beers - think Stouts - Darkness should be your go to. Both in non and barrel-aged versions. Coffee Bender (Brown Coffe Ale) is also solid. And if hoppy is your thing, Abrasive, Axe Man (both versions), Mosh Pit Hazy. Sours, and other styles also on most of the time. And if a straight up beer that tastes like beer is your preference, Hell is it. But...I can't say enough about their (especially) barrel-aged Stouts. And you will find a wide variety of hard-to-finds at Surly as well for purchase. Gift shop is decent, too.”
“Been here many times and was surprised I have not done a review yet! This is the Brewery that blew up the brewery scene in Minnesota. They bought a grainary and moved from backroom industrial brewery to full blown brewery restaurant that changed the laws in MN that paved the way for everyone else! We frequently go the Pizza Upstairs which is a New Haven style pizza and is probably one of the best pizza spots east of the River! We went when Dorit's Tavern popup was going on. It is the standard Surly Pizza offerings, but some unique app offerings. The pickle rolls were interesting and pretty good., but the Jalapeno dip just didn't meet the standard we thought. Not bad, just not special. The pizzas are GREAT. If your a fan of the pepperoni / hot honey fad the I'm your daddy is a really good version. The 3 Rules special pizza was Excellent choice. The sopressetta basil and feta worked really well with the pepperocini and red sauce. The stakeout is also a great choice. The beer of course is excellent at Surly. One of the stalwart MN breweries the sets a quality and flavor standard few breweries can meet. The Axe Man is Midwest's version of the Heady Topper. Very very similar, and my buddy from Massachusetts can attest! Darkness is of course their well know Imperial stout seasonal release which is becoming world renown. The downstairs shared table area food options are delicious. Lots of great options...more of a bbq-ish oriented menu, but plenty of choices so will find something you like! There probably 16 or more brews on tap any given time so you will always find a style for your palette. It is usually a hop-heads wet dream, but the Hells lager and it's derivatives are also famous for their quality and superior flavor profiles. Bender and Coffee Bender are great browns well suited for Fall. In the summer there is HUGE patio are with several cornhole setups and outdoor seating. They have also opened a music venue right next to the brewery, and there are some great bands that come during the summer! It is a perfect pairing!”
“We walked here from our hotel. It was a nice walk and seemed to be in a pretty cool part of town. We were surprised at how big this place was. It was very busy but we were able to find 2 seats at the bar. Our bartender was great and had good recommendations. The food was good. The Mosh Pit Hazy and Mosh Pit Juicy IPA’s were excellent and the When in Rome Italian Lager was surprisingly good (I’m not a lager fan). My wife ordered the Surly Darkness 2024 and it was delicious but the star of the night was the Parker’s Heritage 10-year Heavy Char Bourbon Barrel Aged Darkness (2023). I rated this beer a 5 and I almost never rate beers this high. They also had a cool merch store with a nice selection.”
“Surly's is hands down one the coolest brewery's ever!! This was our first brewery stop in Minneapolis and this place did not disappoint at all. First off, it is a huge place! The beer is delicious...The pizzas were phenomenal we got one of the l'm Your Daddy pizza with the burnt honey mmmm...and the Pioneer Hitchhiker both amazing pizzas... You can sit outside, inside, at the bar, at a table, wherever this place is huge, service is quick, friendly and efficient. We did not do a tour, but if you do, it seems as though you get one free beer at the end. 100% recommend!!”
