Italian cuisine seen through the lens of the Pepe Family, who emigrated from Napoli, stopped in Hoboken, and settled in Carmel-by-the-Sea. ⭐ Best Italian Restaurant - 2024 Golden Pine Cones 🍕 Best Pizza - 2025 Golden Pine Cones 🏆 Best Happy Hour - 2025 Golden Pine Cones The Vesuvio menu tells the Pèpe family's story through food with fantastic wood-burning Neapolitan pizza, classics like Eggplant Parm, and a rotating carte that highlights in-season produce from California farms, homemade ravioli production, and delicious experiments from the new gelato machine. On weekends, Vesuvio erupts. Youths line up beside red velvet ropes, waiting for space at the rooftop Star Bar. You'll find something rare in Carmel at the downstairs bar, folks who live here. Locals keep coming back for inventive cocktails like the Momma's Boy, made with Maker's Mark, Cardamaro, peach preserves, and their Pèpe wines by the glass; or maybe it's the award-winning McSuvio burger that's drawing them in. It's hard to pinpoint one thing because it's everything, but the townies are here and they are loving it. The dining room is more laid-back. Couples chat with neighboring tables and compare notes on what to order from the extensive, ever-evolving menu. If you haven't tried the Truffled Gnocchi, you must. Fried Artichoke Crochette are an insider favorite, as is the grilled heirloom artichoke, from Scattini Farms in Castroville. Vesuvio is named for the volcano that gates the Amalfi Coast, so it seems fitting you should end the night with Limoncello, whether it's in the form of Limoncello Mousse Cake Pèpe makes himself at his nearby Carmel Bakery, or their creative Play That Funky Cello Mousse Boy cocktail. Or maybe you should keep it simple with a $5 shot of the house "Pèpecello," pristine enough to earn an I.G.P. designation from the Italian government. Add it all up and you've got one of the finest Italian restaurants in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Cin cin!
“We were in town for a long weekend, while we had some great meals in Carmel, this was the only spot where we made reservations prior to the trip. I will tell you, it was well worth it. Great food, exceptional service, and an overall lovely dining experience The restaurant itself looks both cozy and inviting from the outside. As far as typical restaurants for the area, this one felt slightly more spacious. This is an Italian restaurant, and the decor/ambiance definitely reflects that We arrived early and didn’t have to wait long for them to get our table ready. Our server was incredible. She was kind, professional, efficient, and an altogether joy. She was there when we needed her, but didn’t hover The menu offers most all of the classic Italian entrees, appetizers, and desserts. They also have plenty of wine, beer, cocktails, and non-alcoholic drink options. Everything looked and sounded amazing. I am a self-proclaimed pizza connoisseur, and their pizza was delicious. I had their sausage and peppers pizza, and I was pleasantly surprised that they used sweet peppers which made for a semi-sweet and savory experience. Everything was tasty, and it was a nice way to unwind after a day of walking and sightseeing Some tips: I would recommend making a reservation. This place is popular, and there were often people waiting towards the entrance for their tables. There’s plenty of tables, they are just in high demand. There’s also a fully stocked bar and area where you can enjoy some libation pre-meal or while you wait Parking is somewhat limited in this small coastal town, and you will most likely have to park down the street somewhere from Vesuvio, but the stroll will be scenic, and if you’re staying nearby I would just recommend walking to the restaurant from your lodging Cheers!!”
“The pasta was delicious! We also had gnocchi and garlic bread appetizer and it was perfect. Outdoor rooftop seating with a fireplace heater was offered and was the perfect place to enjoy the meal. There was no wait and there was available seating inside and on the roof. Prices were decent for a nice dinner. Meal was very heartwarming and comforting.”
“We've eaten here several times in the past, but it's been awhile. We were so glad that we came for dinner! Everything that we ate was so delicious! Started with Scattini Farms Artichoke, a grilled heirloom. The artichoke and aioli della casa sauce were one of the best that we've ever eaten. For entrees, we had the Eggplant Parmigiana with Pappardelle Alfredo and Ragu Bolognese. Dessert was the Carmel Bakery Brownie and an Expresso Martini. Our server, Jeff, was outstanding, and we really enjoyed our interactions with him. We will definitely be back! They have the only rooftop bar in Carmel, and it gets very busy. Besides Vesuvio, Chef Pepe has Little Napoli, Peppoli (Inn At Spanish Bay), Carmel Bakery. All are really very good!”
“Let my pictures do the talking. The food was fantastic, the location was great, and the dining experience was exceptional. After a great round of golf in Monterey, it was the perfect treat to indulge in such a feast. I thoroughly enjoyed all the pizzas, ravioli, and steak. However, I found the tiramisu to be overpriced, and the beef carpaccio was quite tasteless.”
“MY wife and I were passing through Carmel and was told we had to enjoy some Roof top time at Vesuvios. Well we did and it was such an amazing experience. Rooftop just makes everything better. The house made manhattan and old fashioned that are barreled just for them were absolutely delicious to the last drop. I should have came home with a bottle of each so I could relive that experience. All the drinks were made perfectly. The service was excellent. We had roof top and inside servers since we enjoyed both setting and the service was great. If we get to come back to Carmel we are definitely stopping here again! We did enjoy some meatball lollipops and some gnocchi with a burnt to a perfection cheese on top as well. My only complaint is that we didn’t have enough stomach for food and drinks ;)”
