Southern Belle is celebrated local chef Joey Ward's Southern-rooted restaurant located in Atlanta’s Poncey-Highland neighborhood. Southern Belle boasts an expertly crafted cocktail menu, local beers, biodynamic wines, and cutting-edge zero-proof cocktails. Alongside the drinks, look for a menu executed by Ward and his team with a commitment to embracing hyper-seasonality, local farms, and the multicultural flavors of the “New South.” A complement to the food and beverage program, the restaurant’s interior design evokes a Southern, homey feel with exposed brick walls, tufted furniture, salon-style art, and the historic building’s original tin roof. Affectionately named as a nod to the strong-willed, Southern women Ward knows and loves — including his wife and restaurant co-owner, Emily. As for the rest of the team, Ward has pulled in a talented crew of well-known names in the Atlanta culinary landscape, General Manager Emily Levy and Bar Manager Flemming Love.
“I had been wanting to try this place for some time since I went to Georgia Boy and really enjoyed it. I came without a reservation but was easily able to be seated on a Thursday evening. I ordered the Foie Gras and Pasta with lamb bacon. Everything was delicious. I will definitely be back.”
“Start off to say nice ambiance inside We were there for company dinner Food was not up to the standard we expected, still good but nothing really wowed us. We tried all the dishes and desserts on the menu Our favorites were chips dip caviar, Wagyu tartar, salt pepper lobster risotto with diver scallops Some dishes were on the little saltier side And the desserts and cocktails were nothing special but the rose they recommended was on point. Service was great with convenient parking”
“We came for our anniversary and overall very much enjoyed our visit. The food was absolutely amazing, we loved every bite. The chef came out and I wish I could have complimented the food more but my mouth was too full! The beef tartare and the yellowtail crudo were perfectly balanced. The meat in the salt and pepper lobster was so flavorful that it wasn't overpowered by the breading or the seasoning. And the perfectly cooked scallops were paired with the most buttery butternut squash risotto and the Hibiscus apples were surprisingly refreshing in such a rich dish. I never would have expected them to go together so well. The reason I gave the service one less star is because they did one of my LEAST favorite things - they kicked us out. We showed up 5-10 minutes before our reservation and walked inside and we were told that they weren't open yet and asked to go back outside. I HATE when restaurants unlock their doors before they are ready and then ask me to leave. We went and stood outside the door for 2 minutes before they came out and got us. It just seemed so unnecessary and made us embarrassed. We loved our server, though. He was extremely friendly and did a great job of explaining the ideal dining experience and the menu. He made the rest of the night smooth and enjoyable. The atmosphere lost a star because my husband and I could hardly hear each other. We were two of 3-5 people dining and the music was so loud we had to either shout, read lips, or lean over our dishes to have a conversation. We may have been under a speaker. We did not ask to have the music turned down, so that could be considered our fault. I just don't feel like that's something I should have to ask in such a nice restaurant. Despite the issues, we would definitely come back. The food was so good it overcame every other inconvenience. Truly delicious.”
“Southern Belle was a decent experience overall. We’ve been to GA boy in the back which was also ok. -Samosas had good filling they were just on the thicker and harder side for the shell. -Wagyu tartar was a 4/5. Egg in a hole concept was cute but way too much mayo sauce which overwhelmed all other components. -Short ribs (Lomo Saltado) was also ok. There was a spicy yellow sauce that was pretty good. Just wish it had a bit more veggies to balance the saltiness of the meat. -Red wine list looked pretty solid Mainly took off 1 star bc someone in the room got a fish dish and it stank up the entire front room. I don’t think cooked fish should ever smell that loud. Luckily we were done eating since it was making me nauseous. Food flavors overall were a bit too overwhelming and slightly off balance.”
“We were totally excited to have a "Fine Dining Experience " during our visit from Portugal. What a disappointment. We were greeted on entry by the host on arrival who seemed a little confused about our reservation. He seated us at a small table just inside the entry door where a cold blast of air permeated my back and legs each time the door opened. We asked to be seated elsewhere and were advised that was not possible. The host gave me a thin shawl which was useless. Service was poor and very slow. On several occasions we had to ask where our drinks orders were. We also had to request the table be cleared of used glasses and dishes. The menu was also a disappointment. Not as seen on line. Small plates were of no great consequence. What saved our much anticipated meal were the "large plates" they were very tasty? but not different or original as we expected. Overall our experience was a huge expensive disappointment. Be prepared for a big bill for not a unique experience.”
