Toro is a Sushi restaurant in the Honolulu neighborhood of Honolulu.
“Toro has been consistently excellent both times I’ve visited. I did the lunch omakase on each visit, and the quality of the fish was outstanding. Everything tasted fresh, well-prepared, and thoughtfully put together. The service is also amazing. Everyone was welcoming, attentive, and made the experience feel relaxed and enjoyable. The only thing that would make Toro truly next level for me would be offering a vegetarian omakase option at dinner so it could accommodate more dining preferences, but I completely understand why they may not offer it if the demand isn’t there. Overall, definitely an amazing omakase experiences! Highly recommend”
“This was the first experience with omasake for both my wife and I, and we were blown away. We wanted to make this the highlight of our anniversary trip, so we opted for the 16-course $300 menu, and feel we absolutely got our money’s worth on all fronts. Every bite was delicious, a lot of bites were weird, and the meal as a whole was one we’ll both remember for a very long time. The staff was very friendly, and both chefs were thorough in the description of each dish. Despite each of the 10 seats filling up over the course of our first few dishes, there was never more than a minute or two’s delay between the end of one dish and the next course being served. The small setting was a bit loud once everyone was comfortable and chatting, but that wasn’t a problem at all for us - it honestly enhanced the experience, and helped it feel a bit more inviting to talk amongst ourselves and with the staff. We did wish that we had a menu with descriptions to reference; some of the courses were complex enough that it was tough to keep it all in mind as we were enjoying each course, but not having one didn’t detract from the meal at all. We just want to remember it all! Very impressed all around with Toro, and we’ll definitely recommend it to anyone we know who is looking for a top-tier dining experience in Oahu.”
“Three of us got the $100 tasting menu at this relatively new omakase in Honolulu. The location was relatively easy to find, but I thought the interior decor was a bit odd but still fine. I had some omakases before and this one felt up there in terms of freshness. I do miss the experience of "seeing" before being served but understand this is a very small seating. Memorable dishes include the toro with the foie gras was actually very unique and good, alongside the shirako with soba. The ala carte menus is actually very reasonably priced and can easily sample a lot of interesting stuff.”
“We made reservations for the $100 menu and we got a detailed confirmation and information on how to get there as it is a little confusing, it almost has a feel of a speakeasy. We had the most amazing experience, the waitress and both chefs were super friendly and hospitable. The food was absolutely incredible, we loved every single bite. Both the presentation and the flavors were awesome. Truly, such a special experience overall!”
“We visited Toro recently for the second time, and it was... okay. The 80s music is fun, and the intimate 10-seat sushi bar make for a nice atmosphere only slightly marred by the mess of Stanley mugs and water bottles at the end of the bar. Service was mostly friendly and accommodating, although there was confusion between our allergies and another party which resulted in us getting the wrong dish. Not a big deal, but chef was just like "oh, my bad. Enjoy." The food was good, but they have you select your omakase course before arriving ($100, $200, or $300, and that's how you select them). We ordered the $300 course expecting lots of premium ingredients, but we left somewhat disappointed. Some dishes were truly excellent and creative, such as the tako poke made with fresh Osaka seaweed. Much of the fish was very good to excellent, but the rice was cold and hard and the wasabi was not fresh real wasabi (aside from one dish that used minced wasabi). Flavors were hit or miss, with the hits being amazing and the misses being okay but not great. Overall the meal was okay with some highlights that would have been at home in a Michelin star restaurant. Nonetheless the $300 price tag was more than the meal warranted, and better omakase is available for less in Honolulu. We might visit again and order a la carte, but we don't feel Toro is worthwhile for omakase.”
