Mercado is an ode to the flavors restaurateur Jesse Gomez and executive chef Jose Acevedo grew up with. It’s simple and honest food, filled with memories—think simple grilled elote, tamales made with fresh masa, chile relleno with mushroom-chorizo and carnitas from chef Jose’s decades-old family recipe. Also on the menu: an excellent tequila list with over 70 varieties.
“I give this place 5 stars because the food, service, and atmosphere are amazing. However, I wish they hadn’t changed how they make the Pollo en Salsa de Cuatro Chiles. A few years ago, they used to make it with TWO roasted chickens, which is what made me fall in love with the dish. But now they condensed it down to one GRILLED chicken!? It’s still really good, but it was perfect before. I’d rather have the two roasted chickens and pay more if I have to because honestly, it’s just not entirely the same. Don’t get me wrong, I still order it all the time, but every time I eat here, I wish it were TWO ROASTED CHICKENS. I’m sorry, but it just struck a nerve. It’s like having a hot boyfriend who got fat. It’s still the same person… but it was better before.”
“My wife and I dined here a few weeks ago - based on a recommendation online. We were staying in universal city and wanted to dine in a place a little more quiet than all the hustle and bustle of universal walk. The food was fantastic, fresh, and reasonably priced. We left very full and satisfied. Service was overall fine, but nothing spectacular, waitress didn’t stand out all that much. If we are ever in the area again, we would absolutely come back.”
“Went to this place to celebrate my colleagues' bday. Loved all the food my colleagues and I ordered. Our server was Shayla. She was very attentive, kind and friendly. Highly recommended! Valet service is $10. They take cash, credit cards and Zelle as well.”
“Services was decent. The ceviche had good flavor, but it was hard to get everything in one bite because the chunks were so big. The tacos were good. My husband got the steak at the recommendation of the guy who sat us. The steak was devine. Overall the food was good. We were coming after a day at Universal so we were hungry, and for the most part this place satisfied us.”
“Good food. I really like the twist in seafood options like scallops with potatoes in delicious spicy salsa and lobster tacos. Good drinks and friendly staff. Was with a group for work and the service was a little frustrated with us cause we were more concerned with chatting. I like how she pushed us to order before HH ended and was persistent about it. It came off as kinda rude for some but I related to it having worked in the industry - groups are hard. -1 star for Pine nuts in the guac and a little stuffy inside temp wise. Somethings don’t need a twist or a change.”
