Contemporary Japanese dining ventures down a refreshingly new path here at Taisho. Tucked into Ventura Boulevard’s Restaurant Row, our Sherman Oaks restaurant and bar serves up crave-worthy Japanese food and drinks rooted in tradition — but with our own modern twist. Local ingredients, fresh seafood, premium meats, Californian wines and craft sake combine to make a distinctively Taisho dining experience. Take your pick of hot and cold dishes, including our signatures: robatayaki, sashimi and sushi. Then, pair it with a craft cocktail, local brew or glass of junmai. At Taisho, take your pick of four gorgeous dining areas: the front outdoor patio overlooking Ventura, the sprawling bar and lounge, the stylish dining room and our back patio oasis. The entire setting exudes a Japanese-meets-California vibe that’s airy and cosmopolitan — and anchored in a natural beauty that marries the indoors and out. From the food to the ambiance to the service, TAISHO is a sought-after destination because no detail is ever overlooked.
“I really love this place! Cocktails menu is amazing, the Lychee Mojito 10/10, always a must for me. Place was packed, of course it was a Friday night and the Lakers were playing, I recommend making s reservation. Despite how busy the place was, out server David took care of us, great service and delicious food!”
“First time here, and I’ve been meaning to try Taisho for a long time—so glad we finally did because we were definitely impressed and really enjoyed our time. The hosts and servers were very friendly. Our server, Sarah, was especially kind and helpful. She was patient, gave great recommendations, and truly made the experience even better. Everything we ordered was amazing: the spinach salad, lobster roll, spicy albacore roll, toro sushi, crispy chicken, and a few other dishes I can’t even remember because it was all so fresh and delicious. My husband is very picky, especially with sushi, and even he was really impressed—he already promised to take me back. The restaurant has a really nice, date-night vibe, even though we were there with a baby and family. They were very accommodating with the stroller, and we loved the atmosphere and the music—not too loud, just right. Great food, beautiful aesthetic, excellent service, and high quality overall. They also offer convenient valet plus street parking. We’ll definitely be coming back soon. Highly recommend!”
“I had an incredible evening a Taisho with my friend last night. Everything we ordered off the menu was amazing. Service was very attentive, and the whole team was really nice. The only thing that bothered me is that the doors were kept open and it was very cold inside. We ordered the spicy albacore roll, and the truffle salmon roll, which were both really good, we got the salmon miso sashimi as a starter, and the vegetable Gyoza, which is honestly the best I’ve ever had. You can feel it’s made fresh at the restaurant. Two Wagyu nigiri - fire!!!!! And the street corn dish was great too. We tried two types of sake and had the best time! And the dessert!!!! Yum.”
“TLDR: Great food, attentive service, and strong vibes. A solid special-occasion/night out spot in Studio City if you plan ahead for parking and reservations. Really enjoy the atmosphere here. The room feels polished but still relaxed, and service has been consistently attentive every time I’ve come. Ventura parking is tough, so expect to valet. I think it was around $10 or $15 if remember right? Worth noting. Reservations are smart since it gets busy. Now for the food: •Cucumber Kimchee Sunomono is a killer opener. Bright, tangy, wakes up your palate. •Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice is a safe yes. Very crispy, easy to share. •Spicy Kurobuta Fried Rice is the must order. Big portion, runny egg, super satisfying. •Crispy Chicken was solid, not mandatory, but good if the table wants something crunchy. •Sushi Roll tasted fresh and clean, good balance, not heavy. •Butter Cake is a clean finish and worth it. They also accept inKind right now, which helps if you want to offset the cost. Pro tips: • Make a reservation and expect valet parking. • Start with the sunomono. • Do not skip the pork, egg, and orange rice. • Best for date nights or planned dinners”
“UNFORTUNATELY-My friend and I recently had dinner here and, overall, the food was outstanding and the service during our meal was excellent. The restaurant has a wonderful atmosphere, and we genuinely enjoyed our evening. The reason I'm leaving 1 stars instead of 5 is because of what happened at the end of our visit. The meal ended up costing more than I had anticipated, so while I did leave a tip, it was smaller than I would normally prefer. After I paid, our server approached me and questioned the amount of the tip. I was surprised and uncomfortable being asked to explain my gratuity. I understand that tips are an important part of restaurant service, but I don't think guests should be confronted about the amount they leave. It's unfortunate because the food and service throughout the meal were excellent, and this single interaction changed my final impression.”
