Petals of a Peony - Overton Square is a Chinese restaurant in the Midtown neighborhood of Memphis.
“Saw it on the Michelin list. I came during off hours and was surprised it was so slow. Short wait for a table at the entrance. I was seated at a booth but there’s a bar with seating also. I was close enough to hear the bartenders make friendly conversation with guests seated there. Menu was bigger than I expected and a bit confusing with the layout. My server arrived quickly before I was sorted so I switched to the beer list to place an order but she wasn’t so helpful with the local beers. I tried a couple and chose one. Then she was back for my order. I explained that I wanted to try several things but I was by myself and traveling so leftovers weren’t really an option. She recommended some typical options but I figured why come to a highly rated restaurant to eat normal dishes. I’d already chosen the Blackwood ear mushroom and pickled peppers salad, so went with that and being assured it and the beef dish she pushed wouldn’t be too much, I settled in. Mushrooms came out and they were quite a surprise. Larger portion than described. I didn’t know what to expect but the taste, texture and consistency were all new to me. I found them rather addictive. The beef and peppers came out before I could finish the mushrooms. It was the typical large portion Asian dish even though I’d asked repeatedly for smaller selections. Well prepared, good flavors. My server came around after I was well into my meal and seemed surprised that I had no rice. So, she got a bowl of rice for me. Towards the end she came around again and was surprised I’d managed to eat so much. Then she started taking my plates away while I was eating while asking if I was finished…well I guess I am now… the restaurant was filling up, so I just took it as an indication that she wanted me to leave, so I took the check and left. No dessert. It was okay. I think there’s a lot of interesting menu items with a mixture of cultures, but I didn’t see nor feel a Michelin recommendation.”
“Lovely place. Don’t hear any music but actually enjoying the chatter of the atmosphere. Most tables are full and everyone is running, but Riley is very attentive and has a great personality! Today we tried the Black pepper Ribeye Steak dish and Dai’s Chicken. Both = delicious. Almost forgot to take a picture 😬”
“This was our first time here and everything was simply amazing! The greeters were sooooo friendly and professional. (Makayla and the tall guy that looks like a model. Lol.) Our server DeeDee was amazing! Very attentive and friendly. The food came out fast and was hot and fresh! Portion sizes are huge and worth the price. Definitely shareable! 10 out of 10 highly recommend!!! Keep up the amazing work! We will definitely be back.”
“This is a very cute place. They have authentic Sichuan Chinese food and a vast drink menu. I'm not much of a pork person so I ordered the Chicken Lo Mein. My partner ordered the Crispy Duck. I had a Bai. The Jungle Phoenix and my partner the Sichuan Fizz. The staff are so nice. I didn't catch the name of the lady that helped me understand their free dessert sign but she was very sweet and funny. DiDi, our server, was very busy but still nice and helpful too. Only complaint was noise level. This isn't on the restaurant itself- it was pretty busy. Definitely want to come back in the future. The free dessert was their matcha cake and it was so good!”
“My parents came from Taiwan to visit me, and I took them to Petals of a Peony in Midtown. They really enjoyed the flavors, which says a lot! Compared to the Cordova location, the portions here are a bit smaller. The food quality can also be a little inconsistent. Sometimes it’s really delicious, other times just okay. Service was a bit slow during our visit. The Peony Chicken is a must-order though! It’s the most consistent dish and something I always get at any location. Overall, a good experience with some room for improvement. 4 stars.”
