Walnut Street Kitchen is a Contemporary American restaurant in the Montclair neighborhood of Montclair.
“TLDR: amazing food, especially the salads, want to come back and eat everything on the menu Longer version: I was in the mood for something a little different, and the menu at Walnut Street Kitchen called to me. I knew I wanted the Filipino chicken kebabs and snap pea salad, and then there were two specials that stood out—potatchos and a winter citrus salad. We made a meal out of small plates/appetizers and were completely filled up. Every dish was better than the last, and each bite was amazing. The salads/vegetables were incredible, and I LOVED the chicken kebabs while my husband (who doesn’t love fish roe) devoured the potatchos special (which was liberally sprinkled with roe). We haven’t even gotten to the entrees yet, but I have my eye on several dishes lol. We also got the Thai tea tea-ramisu for dessert, and omg, we need to come back and try everything on the dessert menu. I’m sad we haven’t been here sooner. The decor is cute; the atmosphere is welcoming; and it’s just a lovely local place that I wish more people knew about. Highly recommend. Edit: oh the owner/chef Beverly stopped by to chat, and she’s LOVELY. She talked about her food inspiration and how she organizes the menu to make sure people always have something they want to try next. Warm, welcoming, and absolutely a delight. Just cannot recommend enough. Edit 2: eep, we didn’t get to try the bagel bread pudding (which they make with their own bagels), but they send us home with a bag of bagels!! Seriously, if you’re not eating here, you’re missing out.”
“This place has been the talk of the town for quite some time, and it is easy to see why. The quality and love of this food truly shines through with every plate. Starting out with the incredible apps, the bread service is a must! Also, the brussels sprouts and meatballs were out of this world. The pasta was nothing short of extraordinary, home made cavatelli pasta, whipped ricotta with a little heat, perfection! The steak Was an absolute dream, and came with a side of crispy potatoes with a sauce on top that I absolutely could’ve taken a bath in! Last but not least the phenomenal chai tiramisu and cardamom olive oil cake. Wow! And check out the dim sum on Sundays !”
“I ate at Walnut Street Kitchen twice in one week and had two very different experiences. My family of four first ate here on Saturday, 12/20, and the experience was incredible. We ordered the Brussels sprouts, bread, soup, and Mom’s lumpia. Everything was delicious and our servers went above and beyond. It was such a positive visit that we decided to return and spend our Christmas Eve dinner here. Unfortunately, our Christmas Eve experience was completely different. We waited about five minutes just to be seated because all the servers were in the kitchen. After being seated, we ordered both appetizers and mains at the same time, but after an hour only half of our starters had arrived. A couple seated around the same time as us actually requested their check about 15 minutes before their entrées finally arrived, nearly two hours after ordering. We also noticed portion differences from our first visit. We ordered the same bread plate and Brussels sprouts as on Saturday but received drastically smaller portions. On Saturday, we were given three different kinds of bread with multiple pieces of each. On Christmas Eve, we received just one type of bread and six small pieces total, while we saw other tables receiving full bread baskets. By the time our entrées arrived, almost two hours had passed. The two meatloaf dishes were cold, and the two $40 specials looked thrown together and did not feel worth the price (more like $25 in quality and portion). Overall, our first visit was wonderful, but our Christmas Eve dinner was extremely disappointing. I truly hope our second experience was an exception, because the inconsistency in service, portion sizes, and food quality was hard to overlook.”
“Wasn't super pleased with my experience during their dumpling event on Sunday. We waited over an hour for our food, which I have to say, unfortunately, was not worth it. The menu certainly had good ideas and potential, but it just didn't hit. Open to being proven wrong if there's something I'm missing, though. Wish y'all success.”
“I feel compelled to leave a review because while it had potential, something was definitively off about this place, and I don’t think the rating accurately reflects the dining experience. It had potential, the food was actually decent but must not have been handled properly as it didn’t set well with any of us in our party. Server was nice and tried hard, but definitely was inexperienced. The wait time for food was actually insane considering there were only two parties in the entire place and a pre fixe menu. And lastly, the ambiance was just not great. I want to support small local businesses but unfortunately I would highly recommend skipping this place.”
