HAGS is a tiny tasting menu restaurant in the East Village neighborhood of NYC, by Queer people for all people.
“Truly one of the best, most unpretentious but delicious brunch spots I’ve been to recently in New York. We loved the tempeh salad, sausage and biscuit, cornbread french toast, tuna tartare and mushroom truffle grits. Service was perfect. Wouldn’t have minded a few additional beverage options but overall a fabulous dining experience and our out of town guests loved it!”
“Celebrated an anniversary here this week—the food was delicious and the staff are wonderful. Three highlights for me were the vegan cheese course, the caramelized tempeh, and the carrot dessert! They have an excellent wine selection and a beautiful space.”
“Absolutely phenomenal! This was hands-down one of the most exceptional and creatively executed tasting menus I’ve ever had—vegan or otherwise. Every course was a masterclass in flavor, texture, and presentation. You can tell the chef isn’t just cooking plant-based food; they’re creating art with it. From the first bite to the last, each dish was thoughtfully composed, showcasing unexpected ingredients and bold, vibrant flavors that played off each other beautifully. The pacing of the courses was perfect, and the staff were incredibly knowledgeable, walking us through the inspiration and elements of each plate. Whether you’re vegan or simply a lover of great food, this is the kind of dining experience that sticks with you. It’s a rare gem that pushes boundaries while staying deeply satisfying. The all female chef staff was also amazing to see in action. Highly recommend!”
“I went solo to HAGS, and sat at the bar. I would 1000% recommend this experience. This place was insane. The service was wonderful, and the place itself was beautiful. It was intimate and small. I had the vegan tasting menu, and two additional courses- a lot of their vegan substitutes and some beverages they make in house, so they had their own vegan cheese which was delicious. There were not really 6 courses, there were 8, 10 including additional. Every single one was phenomenal. It was food that encouraged you to shut your eyes to taste it, and wish there was more whilst there was also the perfect amount. This place needs a Michelin star, it trumps a few of the Michelin starred places I have been to, and I cannot believe it is the price it is. The wine pairings and non wine pairings were wonderful (I did 50/50). It was unique and every drink made complete sense with the plate in front of me. I had a very beautiful experience at HAGS. It celebrates queerness, veganness and you will celebrate it after you have been here. Do it.”
“Though we enjoyed our meal at HAGS, our experience wasn’t quite as sensational as some of the other reviewers. We found the food a bit underwhelming, especially at this price point. Don’t get me wrong, it was good throughout and sometimes great. The beef entree and the pumpernickel brand, for example, were fantastically done. But many of the remaining dishes were quite vegetable-forward and some of the flavors didn’t seem to make sense together. There’s nothing wrong with a lot of vegetable dishes, but taken together it felt like the meal was a little bare and missing some substance / finesse. The service was awesome and the decor of the place is lovely and memorable. Unfortunately, those were the parts of the meal that left the most lasting impression (vs the meal itself). Also love that they include tip with the menu prices - more restaurants ought to do that. Maybe we aren’t the target demographic, but I think there are better spots in NYC to drop $200 pp.”
