Chef Sungchul shim, celebrated for earning a Michelin star at both his skewer restaurant, Kochi, and his handroll restaurant, Mari, welcomes you to his latest venture, Mari.ne Handroll. The name "Mari" in Korean implies a roll, and "ne" represents "the house of," crafting an ambiance where guests can savor handrolls and beer, sake, soju in a relaxed environment. Mari.ne Handroll is a fusion handroll bar where Korean and Japanese cuisines intertwine, offering a unique blend of flavors. The menu is reminiscent of comforting home-cooked meals, presenting an array of handroll sushi, which combines integrity and the wholesome goodness of honest, healthy food.
“Lowkey one of the best meals I’ve had recently. The whole experience felt super polished without being overly formal, which made it even better for a date night. The shrimp tempura was insanely crispy on the outside while still juicy inside. Super light batter, not greasy at all, and the texture was honestly perfect. The yellowtail sashimi tasted incredibly fresh and buttery. It literally melted in my mouth, and the sauce added just enough brightness and acidity without overpowering the fish. The tuna & salmon hand roll was probably my favorite. The seaweed was still crispy when it came out, and the tuna had that rich, clean flavor that makes you immediately want another one. Really balanced and well executed. Also have to mention the staff because everyone was genuinely warm and attentive the entire time. You can tell they care about the experience, not just the food. Definitely one of those spots that feels stylish and elevated while still comfortable enough to relax and enjoy the night.”
“Went directly after work, at 5pm, so was able to get seated easily before it filled up. The picture is of their special (with bonus oyster) which was perfectly melt-in-the-mouth delicious. Tried their (fish) handroll set - the salmon was particularly tasty, but each of the handrolls was a delight. Would recommend. Because I was hungry when I ordered, also got the pork noodles - the broth was perfect. On leaving I was very full! Next time I go (and there will be a next time) I fully intend to try some of their soju or sake drinks, though this time hot tea was more my speed. Their bathroom is nice too - clean and well stocked. The staff were a great mix of friendly, helpful, and efficient.”
“Couldn’t even take a photo of the hand roll because I was too busy eating, haha! The tuna and grapefruit salad was super fresh, and the Scallop Crudo with mushrooms and scallop was even better thanks to the truffle oil. The oysters were really fresh too. They even suggested the perfect drinks to go with each dish—everything was just so delicious!”
“This spot is a bit of a hole in the wall. It's cozy but elegant. One thing to note, is it's definitely Korean forward cuisine vs. Japanese which does contribute to the overall flavor profiles. We got the 5 hand roll set along with the scallop crudo and Janchi Guksu. For the handrolls the fatty tuna was a favorite, while the shrimp was a miss. It was like a cold shrimp salad. The scallop crudo was delicious, and the Janchi Guksu was a little too fishy for my taste. Overall this place is worth giving a try, but I think I may personally stick to Japanese handrolls.”
“Hand roll shop in midtown with bar-style dining. I had the vegetarian rolls and to be honest they were alright. Regardless of quantity (portion sizes), the taste just wasn’t worth it for the price. I didn’t see the appeal of it, especially for vegetarians (you might enjoy the fish more).”
