Bombera is a Mexican restaurant in the Oakland neighborhood of Oakland.
“What an absolute gem of a restaurant! I’ve wanted to dine here for years and finally made it happen. There are tons of vegan and vegetarian options and the food is phenomenal. They also have a nice mezcal selection. We had the taquitos, tamales, asparagus main, and queso. Would absolutely order everything again. Oh! And the staff is so nice and attentive—we had the pleasure of having a wonderful fellow as our main server (I hate that I didn’t catch his name!) but he was so kind and friendly, really made our dining experience even better.”
“Food was tasty and good quality. Had the chips salsa and guacamole, tostadas, queso fundido, mole tamales and chicken. Prices are fine, comparable to similar style restaurants. Cocktails were good with a nice selection. Good looking patio and indoor dining area. Service was excellent, it was what stood out for us. Paid parking along the street easy to get to. Party of 3 with a baby. Reservations are required. I would rate this as a 4.6. Their service is why I’m going with 5 stars for a Google rating.”
“On Saturday, May 9, 2026, I dined at Bombera for dinner. First off, I highly recommend making a reservation. We had a reservation at 5 pm and arrived about 5 minutes late. There was already about 50 people waiting to be seated. Parking isn't the best but across the street up the hill had plenty and you can always park st Farmer Joe's if you have to. It's literally 20 plus steps from Bombera. I like the setup and decor of the restaurant. They had outdoor dining and two indoor dining areas. When I made a reservation online, it allowed me to select what dining section I wanted to sit in. We selected the indoor dining area behind the kitchen towards the back of the restaurant but for some reason it wasn't available. We were instead seated outside. We had to move from our initial table because the hot sun was beaming down on my back the entire time. Not cool. Here's what we ordered. We went with the Carnitas and Whole Roasted Chicken. The carnitas was good. It had a good fat to pork ratio. The pork had tons of flavor and they had the perfect crisp to tender ratio. Pretty solid carnitas. The tortillas the carnitas came with were very good. The rice and beans were good. The pickled onion and salsas were solid. The Whole Roasted Chicken was some of the best chicken I've ever eaten. Chicken is boring and plain but not this chicken! It was packed with tons of good flavor and spices and seasoned perfectly. It was very moist and tender. The tortillas, black beans, white rice with corn and collard greens were packed with flavor! Those Mexican greens underneath the chicken were beyond good! Some of the best greens I've ever eaten. The tortillas the dish came with were very good as well. We also tried all 3 of their desserts. The cardamom cake was good. Nothing special but good. It was light and spongy but also had a descent denseness to it. It was topped with fresh fruits and whipped cream. The giant oatmeal chocolate chip cookie was okay. Nothing great but if you like cookies you'll like this one. I saw that they premake their desserts when I went to the bathroom so the cookies weren't freshly baked or super soft. The cookie was crunchy but still tasted good. We also tried their spin on Mexican chocolate pudding with whipped cream. It was average, nothing special. You can tell the owner uses and cooks with high quality, organic, fresh farm to table ingredients because the food tasted high quality and didn't give you the Hersey squirts or bubble guts like most Mexican food does lmao 😜 😆 🤣 😉. Service was lacking. The 2 waitresses that served us had a hard time understanding English. English was definitely their second language. There were some issues but I'm not going to waste my time or complain about it because it's not even worth it. It took a very long time to receive our food. I know they were super busy and the restaurant was jammed packed but it took about 45 minutes to receive our food if not longer. Maybe close to 1 hour. Overall, the food was really good and tasted clean/healthy. It's a different type of Mexican food but a good type of Mexican food. I would definitely go back to this restaurant and I recommend everyone should give it a try.”
“Really enjoyed my dinner here. Thought the beets were super special. Wasn't crazy over the red mole, the chicken was really good and the squash was super sweet and the sauce didn't really have much spice or flavor to a company it's surroundings. I would get something else if I came again. Fish tacos looked crazy good kind of difficult to eat though but that's part of the fun. Love the vibe, everyone inside seemed vibrant and happy the lighting is really good it's like bright but not an eyesore whatsoever it's almost cozy, just felt really comfortable. Really liked the staff they seemed happy to be there.”
“If you’re here for the first time, I would recommend: - Smoked Trout tostadas: great appetizer! Beautifully balanced. - Spicy Carrots Misantla: this is a vegan dish but it’s so flavorful and memorable. I want them to release a cookbook so I can recreate it. - Smoked Duck Confit: rich and delicious. I would skip the potato flautas (unremarkable). The pollo rostizado is a generous serving; it can easily serve 4 people. But the taste of the marinade is just average, and the salsa verde is dialed down for the Piedmont and Allendale gringos. It’s a cute place for date night. The first time I came here, the music was way too loud. They turned it down the last time. Service during my last visit could be improved. They’re VERY pushy on the chips and salsa; we were asked 5 times if we wanted them( which are not complimentary! And with added 10.75% tax and 18% tip, will add another $11+ to your bill. Dining in Oakland is ridiculous!). Something as simple as that should be complimentary honestly, like Korean banchan. We also were asked for refills on our cocktails and desserts multiple times by multiple staff. It felt like they were trying to add more items to our bill, despite us having 2 cocktails and 4 dishes already. FYI, they don’t do any complimentary bday treats or wishes. I listed my reservation as a bday dinner on Resy and it didn’t seem to make a difference. A greeting would have at least been nice! On the upside, we were seated all the way in the back near the bathroom, and Chef Dominica constantly checked in on us during our meal. She even waved when we left! That was nice of her.”
