Rory's Place is a Local restaurant in the Ojai neighborhood of Ojai.
“Love this place. One of the best spots in town for dinner. The food is consistently delicious, the atmosphere is great, and the service always makes the experience even better. Definitely a go-to place that I keep coming back to.”
“This is a small cute place with a crowded (tight) front indoor seating area with bar and open kitchen prep area and outdoor back patio. The vibe between the 2 areas felt night and day with the indoor part much more lively and energetic than the more chill laid back patio. Go on a date in the front and hang with family in the back. When we sat down and started going through the menu, we frankly considered leaving because of the eclectic hard to understand what would be good options (plus we had some water works girl next to us that literally cried all dinner). But we decided to commit and generally glad we did. The food was definitely the best part of our experience. It was full of flavor, creative, and surprisingly very good. We got the hearth bread, Japanese sweet potato, and ravioli. All very different but equally as good. The service was decent and we didnt experience the long drawn out waits between dishes as described in other reviews. HOWEVER, I would describe the cadence for the food and style more tapas where the dishes come out separately and more shareable, than everything at once. Be prepare for that. While our server was pretty attentive the staff generally seemed to have "too cool" cant be bothered attitude. Overall, we might go back if we were in the mood but we wouldnt rave about this place like everyone else seems to. Despite the crying table on one side and these 2 girls LA girls hitting on our waiter on the other side, it was an ok experience.”
“Waited over an hour and a half for a table (we didn't book a reservation) and it was worth every second. The food is phenomenal and the servers are wonderful! We got the market salad, hearth bread, chicken liver pate, hanger steak, and banana cream pie. All were delicious but our favourite was the bread!”
“The ambiance at Rory’s Place really makes it a standout experience! The service was very nice - our waiter was lovely, but left us for some longer stretches of time so we were there a bit longer than we wanted to be. The food was extremely fresh and well cooked, particularly the Japanese sweet potato - get it if you go! I also got the Hello Satan cocktail which was a mezcal passionfruit situation. Delicious and well balanced, and the rest of their cocktail menu looked equally as thoughtful. My main dish of King Salmon didn’t blow me away given the price, but my partner really enjoyed his hangar steak.”
“I recently dined here with a group and unfortunately left disappointed. The experience started at check-in. The blonde host wearing a denim outfit was unwelcoming and dismissive. When I approached the host stand, I asked a simple question about bringing my dog through the restaurant since I had booked patio seating. I specifically wanted to be respectful and asked whether there was a separate entrance for guests with dogs because I didn't want to walk him through the dining area if that wasn't appropriate. Instead of receiving a greeting or clear response, I was met with a long stare and felt very unwelcome. Service throughout the evening was disorganized. The pacing of the meal was unusual: our salad arrived before our drinks, we received two separate orders of fries before our main courses, and overall the coursing felt random rather than intentional. As for the food, it was mostly underwhelming. The seafood tower was the highlight of the meal and the quality of the seafood was good overall, although the clams were not enjoyable. The steak was good. The chicken was not a favorite among anyone at our table, though my dog seemed to enjoy it. The herb salad was also unusual and not something I would order again. After being seated, it took longer than expected before anyone greeted our table. The most upsetting part of the evening involved my dog. While he was quietly sitting underneath my chair on the patio, a much larger dog being walked through the area suddenly lunged directly at us. My dog reacted by barking back, but he had been calmly sitting under my chair before the incident. While I understand that another guest's dog and owner are not the restaurant's responsibility, the lack of concern afterward was disappointing. No one checked to see if everything was okay, and the same host who had checked in the other party appeared to give us a dirty look afterward, as though my dog had caused the situation. During the incident, my dog's AirTag fell off. When members of my party later went to ask about it, they were again met with what felt like a dismissive response. They explained the situation and asked for help locating the missing AirTag. The host looked them up and down, shrugged, and simply said, "You can go check if you'd like." It wasn't just the response itself, but the tone and body language that came across as condescending and uninterested in helping guests. What made the experience even more frustrating was seeing the same host repeatedly checking in on people she appeared to know personally while other guests received minimal attention. Overall, the combination of indifferent hospitality, disorganized service, mediocre food, and the handling of the dog incident left a negative impression. I understand that one employee does not represent an entire restaurant, but this particular interaction set the tone for the evening and continued throughout our visit. Definitely not a restaurant for me. As others have mentioned in previous reviews, don't expect attentive service. Between the slow pacing, lack of hospitality, and overall experience, I left feeling disappointed rather than eager to return.”
