A hidden canyon nestled at the base of Mt. St. Helena with the Palisades Mountains ringing the eastern walls, Jericho Canyon Vineyard is breathtaking. Rich in California history, Jericho Canyon’s wild terrain was first reigned in by a member of the 110th New York Civil War infantry when he came west in 1868 to plant fruit orchards and a small, pre-prohibition vineyard. In 1989, as young parents escaping city life, Dale and Marla Bleecher purchased the 140 acre canyon cattle ranch with only a barn and hundred year old farmhouse on site. Modeling the vineyard varietal composition after the great vineyards of Bordeaux, they planted roughly 40 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Sauvignon Blanc. Noted winemaker David Ramey discovered the quality of Jericho Canyon fruit in the late 1998. Over the course of the next eight years, Ramey launched both Rudd Estate and Ramey Wine Cellars with Jericho Canyon Vineyard designated wines as their flagship red wines. The wines were well received by consumers and critics alike; shortly after Dale and Marla tasted the 1998 Rudd Jericho Canyon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, they broke ground on their caves and winery. 2006 was an historic year for the Bleecher family and Jericho Canyon Vineyard; with the completion of their simply designed redwood winery and caves, the Jericho Canyon wines became 100% estate. In 2011, Nicholas Bleecher returned to Jericho Canyon Vineyard after gaining winemaking experience both at UC Davis and abroad. In his early years at Jericho Canyon, he was able to learn from Jericho winemaker Aaron Pott and custom crush client winemakers Heidi Barrett, Thomas Brown, and others. Today, Jericho Canyon’s current release wines are made by Nicholas Bleecher in collaboration with famed consultant Michel Rolland. His focus is on creating small production terroir driven wines that express the power and beauty of their rugged canyon origins.
“Jericho Canyon was one of the highlights of my Napa trip. What sets this winery apart is how intimate and personal the experience feels from start to finish. The ATV tour was fantastic and offered a unique way to explore the property while learning about the vineyard and its history. The scenery was beautiful, and getting out into the vines made the visit feel much more immersive than a typical seated tasting. I also loved the private nature of the experience. It never felt rushed or crowded, and there was plenty of time to ask questions, enjoy the wines, and take in the surroundings. The hospitality was warm and genuine, making it feel more like being welcomed onto someone’s estate than visiting a commercial tasting room. If you’re looking for a more exclusive and memorable Napa experience beyond the larger wineries, Jericho Canyon is absolutely worth a visit.”
“An incredible experience - one of the best. Andrew was a phenomenal host and facilitated a perfect morning at the vineyard.”
“Andrew was so knowledgeable and personable. This is a hidden jewel FOR SURE! The ATV ride through the vineyard was a nice touch. Wines were enjoyable and worthy of purchase.”
“Andrew was a great host giving us an informative tour of the estate, vineyards and wine cave (we had totally forgotten about all the connections to Robert Redford). Of course the wine was the star of the show. This place is known for their cabs but be sure to check out the Sauvignon Blanc as well. Gotta love these micro wineries!!!”
“Yes yes yes!!!! We didn’t know what to expect from a smaller family owned vineyard and it exceeded all of our expectations. The wine was wonderful. The experience was top notch. Make sure to schedule your private tasting on a nice day and ask for the mountain gazebo. Amazing. We could have stayed all day. Our beautiful host was the cherry on top of the sundae. Very knowledgeable and we adored her. Cheers to 50 years (we celebrated a group of ladies turning 50 this year). We loved sharing a day with our new friends at Jericho. Highly recommend.”
