A restaurant embracing the history of Detroit's industrial reach. The cinder block building that housed neighborhood fare for decades has received new life to further the tradition of hand-made, thought-out food and beverage. Expect personal service, handwritten menus, and a fresh, comfortable atmosphere. Food and beverage selections rotate with the seasons and availability of local farm products, with no set menu. Everything is handmade from scratch, with fresh, ethical ingredients from Chef Rigato’s extensive network of farms, butchers and foragers.
“They went above and beyond to accommodate my dietary restriction (soy in this case) and allowed me to try the full tasting menu. I was prepared for that not to be the case, so it really means a lot that they went the extra mile to allow me the opportunity. And to round it out, the food and drinks pairing was impeccable, even with the substitutions. I cannot recommend here enough. From food, drinks, to service, Mabel Gray is outstanding!!”
“Unique taste of food you probably never tried that will blow your mind. Two of us ordered the salad, which is the best salad I ever had. And we also shared the tasting menu and shared each plate, which we paired with wine - just perfect. From the texture of the food, all kinds of flavor that take you from tangy to spicy, umami, to sweet and nutty. You’ll walk out feeling like you did something good for your body. This was enough food for us, since we eat small portions. Would definitely visit again soon ❤️”
“We had a great experience. The food was great and the service was awesome. We selected the Tasting menu and all the dishes were great. The spacing between serving each was well paced. The servers explained in details what each dish consisted of. The ambience was very rustic and cozy. The portion sizes were just right.”
“Wow, what great imaginative food. We had the 7 course tasting menu, all was wonderful. Everything from oysters to duck liver.... The wait staff was excellent, food delicious. They add on a 20% gratuity on the bill - FYI. The only downside is that you have to make reservations so far in advance. Their communication via text is wonderful. The entire experience is truly an amazing one.”
“We dined at Mabel Gray in Ferndale and opted for the tasting menu. Overall, it was a very enjoyable experience. Ajay, our waiter, was fantastic—attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely welcoming. The entire team worked seamlessly and made us feel well taken care of throughout the evening. The meal started beautifully with excellent oysters, followed by a Belgian endive salad, then a tuna crudo that was clean and well-executed. A creamy polenta with pecorino cheese was comforting and rich, and the apple chai sorbet was a refreshing and creative palate cleanser. The final course was Wagyu beef with watercress and curry. While the quality of the food was undeniably high, the only thing I questioned was the overall flow of the menu—it felt like a journey from Italy that ended with curry, which was a bit abrupt stylistically. That said, every dish on its own was thoughtfully prepared and delicious. Because of the strong service and clear talent in the kitchen, this is a place I’ll definitely give another try. Mabel Gray is doing a lot right, and I’m curious to see how the menu evolves.”
