Off The Hook is the neighbourhood restaurant that we dream about (and we live right down the road). We wanted to create a place that welcomes you in, where you can meet a friend for a craft cocktail, bring the kids for a smashburger and some ping pong, or to celebrate a special occasion. We dreamed of a place with incredible seafood, creative pop-up dinners, and a team of passionate chefs taking the bounty of coastal British Columbia and reinterpreting it through a lens of global flavours with a modern twist.
“What a delight and pleasant surprise to have a dining experience that satisfied every desire when going out and spending money. The first thing was the clean cool atmosphere. You feel like you are somewhere very hip, yet down to earth. We sat at the bar and it very comfortable. The bartender was attentive and helpful. Even being sure to ask one of the owners about a vegan pasta dish I had queried him about. We stared with the Yuzu margaritas-- and they were divine. Not too sweet, perfect balance of flavours, and strong! We had the edamame with lemon and salt-- nothing that sepcial with this, but just nice to have a vegan protein available . There was an option of crunchy chili with the edamame but because we also ordered the crispy spicy eggplant we opted for the simpler edamame. The eggplant had great texture, delicately breaded and the sauce was perfect. It was airy and light and the portion was very generous. ( most breaded vegetables are too heavy. This was not the case here ) For our main we tried and split the pasta with arugula, capers, lemon-- it came as a cream sauce but there was a vegan option. I asked the bartender how it was made vegan and while he had thought it was likely olive oil, he made the effort to ask the owner who then came to tell us directly that it was a sauce made with coconut cream . HALLELUJAH, a vegan cream sauce! This is very rare in an establishment that is not specifically catering to vegans. I can't tell you how thrilled I was at this option. It was light and each flavour stood out-- yet the coconut cream used, was not strong tasting at all. The portion size again was much larger than we expected, and the pasta was cooked perfectly. We wanted dessert but were already sated. The vegan option was sorbets -- raspberry lime and mango-- you got a scoop of each. Based on everything else we had, I will bet the sorbets are heavenly with generous portions. If I HAD opted for dessert I would have liked to also indulged in a locally made black walnut liquer that was offered . I will defintely leave room for that the next time as there WILL be a next time . It has been a long time since I have felt that I was valued as a customer with a lot of genuine attention from the owner --she came to our table at least 3 times to check in and was never in a rush even though the place was very busy on a Mother's Day Sunday. All of the staff was friendly and attentive. The cocktails and food were excellent. And before tip our bill was only 102 and change. Remarkable. Good job OFF THE HOOK.”
“My wife and I came here for dinner while on our honeymoon and were celebrating her birthday. I’m not sure if if it was the manager or owner but she stopped by our table a few times to check on the food and service. Our server Paige was amazing and the menu had a curated but yet wide variety of sections. All of the choices we made were amazing. The staff far exceeded our expectations and made our visit special. off-The-Hook is a must-visit if you’re in Salt Spring.”
“I took my partner to Off The Hook for their birthday dinner, and it turned into one of the most memorable dining experiences we’ve had in a long time. From the moment we sat down, it was clear they take both food quality and dietary needs seriously. The food was incredible across the board, but what really stood out was how thoughtfully they handled gluten-free options. My partner has a gluten allergy, and it’s not always easy to find places that go beyond the basics—but this place truly delivers. They even offer gluten-free fish and chips, which is rare to see done this well. We started with a few appetizers that were so good I forgot to take photos after the first bite—which is always a great sign. Every dish felt carefully prepared and full of flavor, not just “good for gluten-free,” but genuinely excellent. Their attention to allergies is next-level. All allergens are clearly labeled on the menu, and each dish comes out with a small flag confirming it’s been checked for the specific allergen. That extra level of care made the whole experience feel safe and stress-free. The menu changes periodically, which keeps things fresh and exciting, and it’s clear they put a lot of thought into every offering. And then the desserts… wow. They had multiple gluten-free options, and the butterscotch pudding in particular was unforgettable—rich, smooth, and indulgent enough to steal the show. To top it all off, they surprised my partner with a special birthday treat, which was such a thoughtful touch. All in all, they made what could have been a stressful dining situation feel effortless, safe, and truly celebratory. If you’re looking for amazing food paired with genuinely thoughtful gluten-free options, this is absolutely the place to go.”
“Stunned! In a good way. Go with an open mind and appreciate the quality of food and service provided. Each dish, quality, flavors are done to perfection 👌 👍. Rotating menu usually would leave people questioning, but we were thrilled we tried Asian menu yesterday, each and every dish was fantastic, service top notch, atmosphere superb! Ensure to call ahead and reserve table, just helps them gauge and accommodate service accordingly. Loved it, absolutely recommended. Much respect to the Chef for putting out memorable dishes, excellent Yuzu Margherita 😊 Thank you, Regards”
“Amazing dinner spot on Salt Spring Island! We tried the Caribbean menu and it was incredible. We started with the coconut shrimp—super crunchy and packed with coconut flavour. For mains, we had the steak and mahi mahi, and wow… totally unexpected in the best way. Everything was delicious and full of surprises. Each item on the plate had its own unique flavour, even the side vegetables were amazing. We’ll definitely be back!”
